  1. Regulating the Cell Cycle There are protein signals, cyclins and regulatory proteins that control how a cell divides.

  2. Regulatory Proteins • Internal regulators: respond to cellular events that happen INSIDE the cell, ex: has the chromatin been replicated? Has the kinetichore fibers attatched to every chromatid? Have all the organelles, molecules and structures been duplicated? Is the cell ready to divide?! • External regulators: are growth factors that stimulate a cell to divide at the proper rate, not too slow, not too fast. This prevents too much mitosis from happening and keeps cell division in check

  3. Mitosis ApoptosisCell birth Cell death

  4. Cancer: when TOO much mitosis happens! Somatic cells LOSE the ability to divide normally.Cancer cells do NOT respond to the signals that regulate the cell cycle resulting in UNCONTROLLABLE cell division Tumors, mass of cells, results.A.Benign: non cancerousB.Malignant: cancerous mass that spreads, metastasis

  5. What Causes Cancer???? • Defects in the genes that regulate cell growth and division • Defect in gene p53 that causes normal cell division • Defect in gene results in defect in DNA which results in cancer • UV radiation, smoking, carcinogens, viruses (HPV), excessive drugs/drinking, etc. which causes defects in DNA • Aging • Family predisposition • 95% of ALL CANCER IS NOT GENETICALLY PASSED ON The results are the same: cancer cells that grow out of control by not responding to the regulatory proteins, uptake nutrients and oxygen from normal cells that ultimately destroys normal cell functioning. Caner cells are the ‘party crashers’ that wreck your home, eat and drink all of your food and you have no control over them.

  6. Treatments for Cancer Surgical removal of lump/tumor Chemotherapy: harsh drugs that have terrible side effects Radiation: bombarding a tumor near the surface of the skin with radioactive isotopes CANCER STATISTICS 1. 1 in 3 Americans will deal with cancer 2. ANNUAL STATISTICS FOR FEMALES: a) Estimated New Cases: Breast 26%, Lung 14%, Colon 10%, Uterine 6%, NH Lymphoma 4%, Thyroid 4%, Melanoma 4% b) Estimated Deaths: Lung 26%, Breast 15%, Colon 9%, Pancreatic 6%, Ovary 6%, NHLymphoma 3%, Leukemia 3% 3. ANNUAL STATISTICS FOR MALES: a) Estimated New Cases: Prostate 25%, Lung 15%, Colon 10%, Bladder 7%, NH Lymphoma, 5%, Melanoma 5%, Kidney 4% b) Estimated Deaths: Lung 31%, Prostate 10% Colon 8%, Pancreatic 6%, Liver 4Leukemia 4%, Esophageal 4%
