State-Wide Standard Changes • What are standards? • Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful by providing clear goals for student learning. • What are the Common Core Standards? • The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

  4. The Common Core State Standards • Are aligned with college and work expectations; • Are clear, understandable and consistent; • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; • Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and • Are evidence-based.

  5. FCAT for Fifth Grade • FCAT 2.0 is scheduled for April 15-26 • The FCAT measures student achievement of the Sunshine State Standards, while the FCAT 2.0 measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, which are more rigorous grade-level expectations. • Fifth grade FCAT Math will be computer based this year • Students are tested in Reading, Math and Science

  6. Fifth Grade Expectations for the Year • Students will be prepared to learn daily. • Paper, Pencils, Homework, Planner • Charged Laptops, if applicable • Students will practice Character Counts! • Students will use creative, problem solving thinking skills.

  7. Fifth Grade Homework Policy • Homework should be practice of class lessons and should not take more than 50 minutes each day. If your child is steadily working on homework and consistently spending more than this, please contact me so we can investigate the reasons. • Seventy (70) Accelerated Reader points are rewarded each semester. Reading before bed is an excellent opportunity to achieve this goal, while developing and nurturing this wonderful habit.

  8. Assignment Due Dates • Students are responsible for turning in all assignments on the date they are due. If an assignment is late, full credit is not possible. • For daily homework assignments turned in the next day, 50% credit is earned. • Long-range projects and overdue class work will lose 10% per day for lateness. Students who are absent from class with an excused absence will have one day for each missed day to make up any work for full credit. • Missed tests should be taken as soon as possible.

  9. Absences/Tardies • When your child is absent, he/she is marked unexcused until a note or e-mail is received by the teacher. The make-up work from unexcused absences will only earn 50%. • Students are responsible for getting, doing, and turning in any missed assignments. • Your child can enter the classroom beginning at 8:20 each day. The tardy bell rings at 8:30. • Science or Math starts promptly at 8:35.

  12. 3-5 Grade Weighting • Language Arts • Reading=50%, • Grammar, writing, & Vocabulary=40% • Spelling=10% • Math • Tests=60% • Classwork=30% • Homework/Fluency=10% • Social Studies and Science • Tests= 50% • Classwork=40% • Homework=10%

Resources for Learning • Math Facts in a Flash is available to you via the internet until 6:00 PM. • AR testing opportunities are available in the classroom during the day and the Media Center before school. • IXL is available 24 hours a day from home or school! • Sunshine State Books • Digital Textbook Access

Volunteering Opportunities • To volunteer you must first complete a St. Johns County Volunteer Application • Some possible opportunities include: • Room Parent-we need a co chair! • Box Top Coordinator-we need a volunteer! • Fun Run class representative-we need a volunteer! • Leadership Luncheon-more later!

  16. Class Team Selection Process Students will participate in two class battles during Media Resource Classes in February. Students will receive scores for these battles. Students must read and take the AR quiz to receive credit for reading the SSYRA book. (AR score must be 60% or higher to pass. One quiz retake is permitted during Media Resource Class if necessary) We will add the number of SSYRA books read and passed to their battle scores. The 5 highest scores will make up our class team. In the event of a tie, we will average AR test scores for the SSYRA books read. Example: Class Battle Score from round 1 = 25 Class Battle Score from round 2 = 21 Number of SSYRA Books read = 15 Student Score = 61 Grade Level Battle Dates3rd – March 18, 20134th – March 19, 20135th – March 20, 2013School Team Selection Battle DateMarch 21, 2013District Battle DateMay 7, 2013 School Team Selection Process All students from the winning class teams of each grade level will compete on March 31st to represent our school at the district battle. 5 Students and 2 alternates will be selected for our school team.

  17. The Fall PVPV/Rawlings Scholastic Book Fair is coming! When: December 4th - 14th, 2012 Location: PVPV Stage This will be a great opportunity to pick up Christmas gifts! See you at the Fair! Remember the Eagles’ motto: Read, Read, Read!
