Water Recycling System Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure • Description • Recycling water is of prime importance for long duration spaceflight including Shuttle emergency operations • Examine new low weight and power methods for water purification that eliminate impact of VOCs • Compare the performance of these new systems with current RO system based on weight, power, reliability, and lifetime Technologies and Capabilities • Evaluate new water separation and purification methods that do not use expendable materials, and then select the most efficient system, e.g. • Water purification with hydrated salts provides a convent method to eliminate VOCs. • Electro-Dialysis-Reversal provides an alternate method of purification. • Vacuum Distillation provides with a cold plate provides another method of purification.
