These “GO”verbs are a “family” of Spanish verbs. They all have something in common – they all end in “GO” at the end of the first person singular (YO) of the present tense indicative. Complete the following chart and do the accompanying translations from English to Spanish to practice these verbs. These are important verbs. They will play an important role in future grammatical concepts. Learn these well!! Remember, there areusually 3 English translations for each person of the Spanish present indicative.
1. tener – to have tengo tenemos tienestenéis tienetienen
TENER is used to express many different things. Be sure you know the following:
Note the expressions with TENER!!! Know them!!! • tener – (possession) Tengo mis libros. I have my books. • tener…años -¿Cuántos años tienes? How old are you? • -Tengo dieciséis años. I am 16 years old. • tener que + el infinitivo Tenemos que estudiar. We have to study. (tener que + el infinitivo = an obligation, ie. someone has to do something.) • (sinónimo – tener aue + infinitivo = deber + infinitivo) • Tengo que estudiar. = Debo estudiar. = I have to (must) study. • tener (mucho) sueño Todos tienen (mucho) sueño. Everyone is (very)sleepy. • tener (mucho) frío Ana tiene (mucho) frío. Ana is (very) cold, • tener (mucho) calor Tenemos (mucho) calor. We are (very) hot. • tener (mucha) sed Ana tiene (mucha) sed. Ana is (very) thirsty. • tener (mucha) hambre ¿Tienen Uds. (mucha) hambre? Are you (very) hungry? • tener (mucha) suerte Ellos tienen (mucha) suerte. They are (very) lucky. • tener razón ¡Tienes razón! You are right! • no tener razón ¡No tienes razón! You are not right! or • You are wrong! • .

The little boys and girls are sleepy. 8. I am very hungry. Yo tengo mi carpeta de argollas. Yo tengo frío. Nosotros (Nosotras) tenemos que estudiar. Ellos (Ellas) tienen calor. Ella tiene dieciséis años. Tú tienes sed. Yo tengo mucha hambre. Los niños tienen sueño.

Let’s practice with HACER. Write the Spanish equivalent. -What are you (tú) doing? What are you (tú) making? -I am making a project. I am doing a project. We ask a question. We do ask a question. We are asking a question. -¿Qué haces tú? -Yo hago un proyecto. Nosotros (Nosotras) hacemos una pregunta.
3. poner – to put;to place;to set pongo ponemos pones ponéis pone ponen
Let’s practice with PONER. Write the Spanish equivalent. • I place my books in my bookbag. • On the weekends, I set the table. My sister sets the table • during the week. Yo pongo mis libros en mi mochila. Los fines de semana, yo pongo la mesa. Mi hermana pone la mesa durante (por) la semana.
4. traer– to bring traigo traemos traes traéis trae traen
Let’s practice with TRAER. Write the Spanish equivalent. • We bring the materials to the class. • I bring the books. • 3. He doesn’t* bring the assignment. Nosotros (Nosotras) traemos los materiales a la clase. Yo traigo los libros. 3 Él notrae la tarea. *Remember to place NOin front of the conjugated verb to make the sentence negative.
5. decir – to say;to tell digo decimos dices decís dice dicen
Let’s practice with DECIR. Write the Spanish equivalent. • I always tell the truth. • We don’t* say much. • 3. They tell the truth too! Yo siempre digo la verdad. Nosotros (Nosotras) no decimos mucho. ¡Ellos (Ellas) dicen la verdad también! *Remember to place NOin front of the conjugated verb to make the sentence negative.
6. oír – to hear oigo oímos oyes oís oye oyen
Let’s practice with OÍR. Write the Spanish equivalent. 1. -What do you (Ud.) hear? -I don’t* hear anything. -¿Qué oye Usted? -Yo nooigo nada. 2. We hear somthing. Nosotros (Nosotras) oímos algo. *Remember to place NOin front of the conjugated verb to make the sentence negative.
7. salir (de + a place) – to leave;go out;come out salgo salimos sales salís sale salen
Let’s practice with SALIR. Write the Spanish equivalent. 1. –At what time do you (tú) the house? -I leave the house at 6:30. 2. They leave on time. -¿A qué hora sales tú de la casa? -Yo salgo de la casa a las seis y media (treinta). Ellos (Ellas) salen a tiempo.
8. venir – to come vengo venimos vienesvenís vienevienen
Let’s practice with VENIR. Write the Spanish equivalent. • I come to the school every day. • Miguel comes to Spain. • 3. We come to the party. Yo vengo a la escuela todos los días. Miguel viene a España. Nosotros (Nosotras) venimos a la fiesta.
