5. The Navigation Act • When? • 1651 • What did it tax? • Restricted shipping • How did this effect the colonists? • English goods could only be shipped on English ships • The English colonists were not allowed to trade with anyone who was NOT English. ·

6. The Stamp Act • When? • 1765-1766 • How did this effect the colonists? • It was the first tax used to raise money for England. The other taxes imposed on the Colonists were mostly used for maintaining the trading and commerce system. • The tax was hard on lawyers and those who worked in the courts. They had to print papers very often, so this was expensive. • Colonists threatened tax collectors with tarring and feathering. • What did it tax? • The act required all legal documents, permits, contracts, newspapers, wills, pamphlets, and playing cards in the American colonies to carry a tax stamp.

The Quartering Act • When? •  1765 • What did it tax? • The act required that troops be housed not only in business and empty buildings but in peoples’ homes as well. • How did this effect the colonists? • Colonists were angry over being forced to have soldiers live in their homes. • Colonists had to give up beds and food to soldiers now forced to live with them. ·

The Townshend Act • When? •  1767 • What did it tax? • placed a tax on common products imported into the colonies, such as lead, paper, paint, glass, and tea • a tax on imports • How did this effect the colonists? • the British East India Company undercut the prices of other importers…meaning, they were the cheapest company, so there was no competition. • led to the Tea Act ·

9. The Currency Act • When? • 1764 • What did it tax? • prohibited the colonists from making their own money. • How did this effect the colonists? • Colonists were not allowed to print their own money and were told the money they already had, now had no value. ·

10. The Sugar Act • When? •  1764 • What did it tax? • Sugar not produced in Britain. • How did this effect the colonists? • It attempted to put a tax on all sugar that did not come from England…making it too expensive for colonists to buy anything that was NOT British ·

11. The Tea Act • When? •  1773 • What did it tax? • Did NOT add a new tax, but rather took away the tax on tea to ONLY tea sold by the British East India Company. • How did this effect the colonists? • No one wanted to buy colonial tea. • British East India Company tea was cheaper! • Colonists boycotted British tea • This Act led directly to the Boston Tea Party ·

The Intolerable Acts • When? • 1774 • What did it tax? • The Currency Act, Tea Act, Quartering Act are all considered part of the Intolerable Acts. • This was how the British Government tried to punish the colonists AFTER the Boston Tea Party. • How did this effect the colonists? • All of these combined acts led to the start of the Revolutionary War! ·
