INNOVATION and the ENTREPRENEUR • Innovation is the specific function of entrepreneurship • Is the means to create new wealth • Is the process to convert opportunities into marketable ideas • Is the vision to create a good idea and the perseverance and dedication to remain with the concept through implementation.

  3. INNOVATION and the ENTREPRENEUR • Entrepreneurs blend imaginative and creative thinking with a systematic, logical process ability. • They develop ability to see, recognize and develop opportunities. • There key questions need to be addressed Questions include:

  4. INNOVATION and the ENTREPRENEUR • What is the problem? • Whom does it affect? • How does it affect? • What costs are involved? • Can it be solved? • Would the marketplace pay for a solution?

  5. Role of Creativity • Is the generation of ideas that result in the improved efficiency of a system. • Two aspects:-process and – people • Process (goal oriented) • People (resources that determine the solution)

  6. Problem Solving Approaches/Adaptor • Solving rather than finding problem • Attempts to refine current practices • Tends to be means oriented • Sensitive to group cohesion and cooperation • Precise methodical approach • Employees are disciplined

  7. Problem Solving Approaches/Innovator • Discovers problems and avenues of solutions • Questions basic assumptions related to current practices • Little regard for means- more interested in ends • Little tolerance for routine work • No need for consensus

  8. Nature of the Creative Process • Creativity is a process that can developed and improved • Creativity is not some mysterious and rare talent reserved for few • The creative process involves seeing relationship between things that others have not seen

  9. Background of Knowledge Accumulation • Read in a variety of field • Join professional groups and associations • Attend professional meetings and seminars • Travel to new places • Talk to people about your subject • Develop a subject library for future reference • Pursue your natural curiosity

  10. Incubation Process • Engage in routine or mindless activities • Exercise regularly • Play (sport, game, puzzle) • Think about the project or problem before falling asleep • Meditate and or self hypnosis • Sit back and relax on a regular basis

  11. Idea Experience • Day dream and fantasize about your project • Practice your hobbies • Working in leisurely enrolment • Keep a notebook to record late night or early morning ideas • Take break while working

Evaluation and Implementation • Increase your energy level with proper exercise, diet and rest • Educate yourself in the business planning, process and all facets of business • Test your ideas with knowledgeable people • Take notice of your intuitive ideas and feelings • Seek advice from others…
