2. Welcome to IVC Nursing Program • This is a Program, not just a group of classes • It is designed to prepare you for: • “Nursing Boards” called NCLEX - required for licensure • Practicing as a RN • A career requiring lifelong learning • The profession of nursing is ever changing and rarely stagnant • Safety requirements for patients, communities, & nurses • Nurses are at the bedside, in informatics, in research, in education, in administration, etc.

3. A Bit About You… What is your personal background in healthcare? 1. Certified Nurse Assistant or Home Health Aide 2. EMT or Paramedic 3. LVN 4. Telemetry or Pharmacy Technician 5. None of the above What ever your background, this program will work with you

4. Screens Required for the Program • Background Results • www.sdnsebackground.com • If any results are considered negative, make an appointment with the Program Director and begin a paper trail to explain what happened, how you have corrected it, and your current status. • Healthcare facilities will not allow students with a record of violence to practice • Drug Screen • www.questdiagnostics.com/appointments • “Dilute” urine specimens may not be accepted • If results positive for any drug, make an appointment with the Program Director

5. Physical Exam • Call the Student Health Center @ 355-6310 for appt. • Bring immunization record. If necessary, ck with Public Health • If unable to provide, titers may be necessary . • MMR and TD is free at the Student Health Center if needed. • Hepatitis B & Varicella are recommended and available at the Public Health Department for a cost. • The TB skin test (PPD) requires a follow-up within 48-72 hours. • If you tested positive on a TB skin test in the past, bring a recent chest x-ray report or ask the nurse to schedule you for one. (Cost will be about $24.00)

Estimated Costs (~9600 for whole program) • Tuition $2,180 -2,250 (tuition @ $26/unit) • Uniforms, etc $ 125 – 250 • Books $1,000 -2,000 • Background /Drug Screen $ 65 minimum • ATI Nurse-in-a-Box $ 380 • ATI Virtual $ 250 • Malpractice Insurance $ 30 • Graduation $ 80 • Licensure $ 400 • Lab Fee (material used) $ 20-60 depending on class in 2010 • Physical Exam Free, if on campus • CPR Variable, ck on campus • Immun., Vaccines, & TB Variable, some free on campus • Meals in clinical $ 650 – 900 • Travel to clinical @0.45 $2,940

12. Grading and Progression • Grades • Grading not the same as other courses • 75% is a C • Progression • To progress to next semester, you must be successful • Only 1 ‘second chance’ , if you withdraw or fail to earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher grade in a semester • Successful is: • 75% average or ‘satisfactory’ and 75% on final in lecture, clinical, and skills lab

13. Skills Laboratories • There are 4 skills rooms • 2 Low-Tech • 2 High-Fidelity – capable of interactive simulations • All equipment and supplies are expensive. Treat all with respect or it will not be there for you to learn. • NO cell phones, cameras, food, or drinks allowed. • In these 4 rooms are where you will: • Practice all your nursing skills • Be ‘checked-off’ as competent in all required skills • Complete any required practicum

14. ATI Testing • ATI Tests are administered to provide a standardized method of assessing your knowledge • ATI is accepted by most nursing as valid & reliable tool • Proctored tests are given in each semester • A Scoring is provided in the Student Handbook • List is provided in the Student Handbook • You must have ATI’s ‘Nurse-in-the-Box’ with study guides, books, & DVDs • At the end of 4th semester you will need to purchase Virtual ATI to prepare you for the NCLEX
