ASR Services Symposium2011 Ian Birks Chief Executive Officer March 2011
Key points • Australian productivity now at its lowest level in over 40 years and has been in decline since 2000. • Australia spends 2.01% of its GDP on R&D • OECD average is 2.26% and well behind key leadership nations • In 2008 Australian govt spend on science and innovation was 22% lower than it was in 1994. • The vision for the NBN which offers a potentially transformative force for our engagement in the global digital economy. • The NBN is already driving increased investment in, and focus on, innovation and collaboration. • The marriage of the NBN and Cloud Computing provides a great dynamic for Australian business to be a world leader in development of innovative new services.
Recommendation from AIIA We urgently need a definitive research and metrics activity to clarify how the synergies between the Australian services economy, the NBN infrastructure and Cloud Computing can be exploited. AIIA thinks this should be co-funded between all services industry sectors and Federal Government.
