Middle Colonies • Religious Freedom • Quakers in PA, Catholics in MD • Middle class of small farmers, entrepreneurs, artisans
Southern Colonies • Based on family status and land ownership • Allegiance to Church of England • Mountains: Scottish and Irish hunters
Types of charters • Joint stock – corporate colonies were organized by a joint stock company for the benefit of the shareholders. • Royal – a governor serves as its’ chief official with a colonial assembly approving laws before they go into effect. • Proprietary – granted to a proprietor (owner) by the king. Could be a person or group of persons. • Self Governing – independent of king or corporation.
13 Colonies Group Work I will help divide the class into groups. Each group will share one of the old textbooks pages 76-77 Each group will answer the following questions about their groups. What year was this colony founded? Who founded the colony? Why was the colony founded? What type of economy? What type of government? Who settled there? (see page 77) The groups we will concentrate on are: Massachusetts Plymouth/ Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire/Exeter, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North/South Carolina, Georgia. Each small group will answer all questions. I will review proper answers with the class.
