THE INTITAL EXPERIMENT Taleyarkhan’s group utilized a pulse of neutrons to seed a series of tiny bubbles in a vat of deuterated acetone (C3D6O). The fluid was then subjected to ultrasonic oscillations where upon the Oak Ridge group reported measurements of tritium and an output neutron flux spectrum that was consistent with d-d fusion.
EXPLNATATION: SONOFUSION The ultrasonic waves cause the tiny bubbles to oscillate wildly growing in to about a millimeter. The ambient fluid pressure vs. the near vacuum inside the bubble cause a cataclysmic collapse accompanied by a flash of light which is dubbed Sonoluminescence. The collapsing bubble confines the energy resulting in up temperature. Shock wave simulations show 10 megakelvins are possible. Here d-d fusion may occur. This sort of fusion has been dubbed Sonofusion or Acoustic Inertial Confinement Fusion (AICF).
REPLICATION & CONTROVERSY The experiment has been replicated by several groups with differing results.
