  2. School Wide Goals for Leuzinger • Statement in regard to our current leadership • Where our students should be as the semester ends

  3. Good News for Leuzinger’s Students! Updates… • Small Learning Communities are on the way! • Parents have been surveyed. • Students have been surveyed. • Faculty members have submitted proposals for possible academies, and decisions will be made during second semester.

  4. Do your students still need to pass the ELA or MATH section of the CAHSEE? Kaplan classes start Feb. 20th in the Testing Center

  5. Upcoming Boot Camps for CAHSEE Testing *Seats are limited—sign up as soon as possible (See Mr. Briggs in the Attendance Office for a Permission Slip) *Students must attend Auditorium, Friday, January 29th at 3:00pm to be pre-tested for the program *Students need to arrive to the Testing Center on Saturday, February 20th by 8:45am to sign up for a classroom

  6. Details about the Boot Camps • This is the Saturday class that you want your students to participate in if they have not passed the CAHSEE! • Students MUST pass the CAHSEE to graduate, and Kaplan can help THEM! • Exciting incentives for participating students: Key chains, Gift Cards, T-shirt, I-Pod Raffle Less Stress! Fun Atmosphere! Learn Strategies! • *Classes will be held on four Saturdays (must attend all four) • 9:00am-1:00pm are the times of the Boot Camps. ***See sign-up form at the back of this handout!

  7. Testing Information: The CAHSEE Exam • CAHSEE exams are coming up in March for tenth graders. This will be their first opportunity to take and pass the test. • Students have to pass the math and English portions of the exam with a score of 350 or higher to be proficient. • Meetings were recently held with various tenth graders to inform them about the CAHSEE and their various testing accommodations. • Tenth grade English teachers will be incorporating testing strategies, test preparation lessons, and will be emphasizing timed writing practice throughout the next three months to prepare students for the CAHSEE. • Passing both portions of the CAHSEE is a requirement for receiving a diploma.

  8. Discipline • Reminder- No electronics out on campus during school hours or they will be confiscated (1st time parent/guardian can pick up, 2nd time it is held until the end of the school year) • Reminder- Please make sure your student follows the dress code- no midriff, strapless or low cut shirts, no short shorts or dresses, pants must be worn at the waist line, no hats or beanies (unless it’s raining or it’s cold outside)

  9. Attendance • Truancy= 3 unexcused absences in 1 school year (CA Ed Code 48260) • Daily Attendance= Please ensure that your child is present at school on time every day. (by 7:55 AM) • Effects of poor/late attendance= Students lose valuable learning time, grades drop, and students fall behind in credits

Attendance Figures Average Daily Attendance (ADA) Funding for California public schools is based each school’s average daily attendance (ADA) Each student’s presence at school each day equates to $35 per day in funds from the state for the school to operate Example: If 1 student attends school 5 consecutive days: 1 X 5 X $35= $175 in weekly funds the school receives to operate just for that student!

Truancy Consequences Lunch Detentions: trash pick up In-School Suspensions “No Go” List: Students with 10+ unexcused period absences in a quarter will not be permitted to participate in after school activities until the following quarter. Truancy Citations: Issued by Lawndale Sheriffs Department. Start at $350.00. “Students considered truant if they have 3+ absences without valid excuses in 1 school year” (CA Education Code 48260)

  16. Important Upcoming Dates REMINDER Open House for 2nd semester is scheduled for Thursday March 11, 2010 from 6:30pm until 8:00pm.  Please mark your calendars.  More information will come at the start of the second semester.

  17. Testing and Grading Updates • Benchmarks will be administered again during the final two weeks of January in the core subject areas: Math, English, Science, and History. • The last progress report was mailed home over Winter Break. You should have already received the grades in the mail. • If grades did not arrive for some reason, please call Data Processing at (310) 263-2236 to verify that the offices have a correct address on file for you. If students had a “D” or lower in a course, teachers were asked to leave comments with the grade to inform you as to why your student had a low grade. • The first semester report card is right around the corner! Please work with your students to encourage them to attend tutoring and get extra help, if necessary, to improve grades by the end of January.

  18. First Semester Final Exam Schedule • Wednesday, February 3rd and Thursday, February 4th will be Final Exam Days for all students. • Please encourage your students to study for exams, rest the night before exams, eat breakfast the morning of exams, and take these test seriously! • Both Wednesday and Thursday will be minimum days for students. • Friday, February 5th is a day off for students to prepare for the second semester.

  19. Counseling Updates • Counselors have been meeting with each class individually from seniors down to freshman. • They are personally speaking to students about second semester scheduling to be sure students are placed in classes correctly. • If your student has particular concerns or questions regarding second semester classes, they should see their counselor prior to the end of first semester. • See the attached list of counselors to contact individual staff members.

  20. Afterschool Opportunities • Club Olympian at Leuzinger High School is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily as a safe after-school alternative. • The club is located in room 9-11 and the contact number is, (310)263-2250. • The Club Olympian program coordinator is Ms. Barajas. • Students will sign-in daily at Room 9-11, and that will be the contact number to call if you’re looking for your student.
