  1. Tutsi’s Vs. Hutu’s Molly Coburn Global History 12

  2. Genocide- The systematic killing of a racial or cultural group. • Human Rights Abuse- Abuse of the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled. This event is considered a genocide because most of the people who died were Tutsi and most of the killing was done by the Hutu people. It was against the less valued people. It started with Belgium taking over Rwanda. The chosen president was part Hutu as well as part Tutsi. Belgium also put some Tutsi people in charge. The Belgians believed the Tutsi’s to be superior and for twenty years they got better jobs and educational opportunities. The Hutu people were unhappy with the Tutsi’s being in charge and resentment was building up. The Hutu’s started their own political group called the Parmehutu to run against the Tutsi party. They won.

  3. President Juvenal Habyarimana

  4. President Habyarimana’s plane was shot down and he was killed. Thousands of Tutsi’s and moderate Hutu’s are killed or made flee from the country. Belgium supports the fight against the Tutsi’s and thousands are killed or flee to other countries. Eventually in 1963, the Tutsis who earlier fled try to attack Rwanda but fail causing more Tutsis to flee. The ones that are left are pushed from their jobs and schools and quotas are put in so Tutsi’s can only occupy 9% of available jobs and Hutu’s get first pick.

  5. Other than the Tutsi people often being taller and thinner than the Hutu’s they were very similar. They spoke the same language, inhabited the same areas and followed the same traditions.
