Speech Delivery What to do! What NOT to do!
Before speaking • Before speaking, make sure you… • Dress well (increase confidence) • Have the entire speech written out verbatim • Have the introduction memorized • Take a mouthful or two of water • Make sure all your notes are in order • Make sure all tech needs are met • Walk to the lectern with confidence; smile!
OK, it’s time to begin! • Start with CONFIDENCE • Your introduction is memorized, so look out at the audience and start with strength and confidence! • VOLUME: Make sure the volume of your voice is appropriate to the size of the room and to rise above any ambient sounds. And NO drop off! • VARIETY: Make sure you are using appropriate vocal variety – stress appropriate ideas, use dramatic pausing, punch important words and ideas, and vary the rate of your speech.
More advice on VERBAL delivery • Eliminate fillers: Ummmm, ya know, like • Replace fillers with SILENCE. Calmly collect your thoughts and move on. • Clarify pronunciation before you speak. First ask yourself if you need to use that big word, or if you could use a shorter synonym your audience will certainly know. • SLOW DOWN! They only get to hear each word once! • Enunciate! Speak clearly.
NONVERBAL delivery tips • EYE CONTACT: Break the room up into three or four sections and visit those sections equally. Afraid of eyes? Look at hair! • Gestures: Use natural hand gestures that add to (not detract from) your speech. • Athletic Stance: Sounds funny, but you breath differently and can faint if not careful. • Conversational tone: Most effective
Controlling FEAR! • Relax! The audience is either neutral or positive, and they don’t know if you are nervous. • Focus on the message. Be a selfless conduit for an interesting message. You happen to be the one sharing the information, but the speech is really about the information being shared, not about you. • Don’t picture them naked! Bad myth that needs to be stopped. Doing this will be more distracting than helpful. • KNOW YOUR SPEECH: The best thing you can do to reduce fear is to know the text of your speech. The better you know it, the less you will fear.
