Parents feel: • Angry • Drained • Helpless • Wondering if they are the only parent feeling this way?? • Kids feel: • Like they have succeeded in gaining attention • They have manipulated the parent • They will wear the parent down • They have won! Power Struggles Some children love to engage parents in power struggles. This becomes a no-win situation for the parent and the child.
Tips for avoiding Power Struggles • Do not allow yourself to get into an argument • Choose your battles • Respond calmly, but firmly • Be consistent with rules and consequences • Give yourself time to think about the decision • Don’t be concerned about being “right” What to do???
Tips for Making Rules • Make rules for behavior, curfews, issues relating to health and safety • State what you want very clearly • Anticipate and discuss potential problems in advance • When age appropriate, involve children in rule making (you still make the final decision) Making Rules Rules allow family members to trust each other and know what is expected.

Discipline = To Teach • Done in a calm, respectful manner • Addresses the child’s behavior • Teacher responsibility for one’s own actions and choices • Encourages good decision making • Strengthens self-esteem • Has long-term effect Discipline or Punishment?? These words are often thought to be the same thing. However, there are significant differences.
Punishment = To Inflict Pain • Done out of anger and hostility • Is about power and control • Focuses on the child, not the behavior • Creates resentment • Destroys self-esteem • Has short-term effect Discipline or Punishment?? Things to Do: • Choose consequences you can live with • When age appropriate, involve child in determining consequences • Let child know consequences in advance • Always follow through • Apply with empathy • Express belief your child can make a good choice Consequences Consequences are one of the best tools for teaching children to make good choices and to be responsible for their actions.
Whenever possible allow your teen to face a natural consequence to an undesirable or attitude. Social Access Ground your teen Restrict phone privileges Uninstall instant / text messaging
Please Don’t: • Expect 100% success • Make consequences to stiff • Show your anger • Talk too much • Forget to re-evaluate as child gets older Consequences Consequences are one of the best tools for teaching children to make good choices and to be responsible for their actions.
