Data Center Strategy • RFP • SDSC & NERSC potential • Service model • Sustainability program is funding data center energy efficiency study
Research Cyberinfrastructure Pilot • VCRs and CIOs support a $5M initiative • Northern and Southern CA facilities to prototype how to use shared compute and data storage resources • Governance process involving faculty, CIOs, and VCRs • Plan for evaluation process to help guide a UC-wide research environment
Sharing and Consolidation • UCOP will be running up to 6 ERS environments by next year • UCOP will be running 9 of the 11 PPS environments • UCOP will be taking on more mainframe load • Numerous discussions between campuses about enhancing sharing • Example – LBNL/UCB cluster mgt
UCTrust Status • AYSO, Connexxus, and HR LMS integrated into UCTruxt • UC Grid, Enterprise Risk Management, and UC Ready will be integrated • 7 of 10 campuses and UCOP certified as UCTrust identity providers – 10 of 10 by end of 2008 • Working to integrate services from federal agencies (grants.gov and NIH) • UCTrust leadership moving to campuses, initially UCD
Information Security • Public, Regents, Legislators need evidence of UC’s commitment to safeguard personally identifying information (PII) • Campuses conducted a self assessment of their compliance with the UC Electronic Information Security Policy. • Progress and work still to be done
Campuses Pursuing Security Measures • Risk assessments • Security education and awareness • Inventories of sensitive data • Protection/removal of SSNs (PII) • Data encryption • Permission-based access to personal data • Network access controls (firewalls, intrusion detection systems, minimum connectivity standards, virus protection strategies) • Application vulnerability scans • Information security audits
Web Accessibility • Systemwide Work Group • Raising awareness • Sample language for RFPs (VPAT) • UC attendance at CA Web Accessibility Conference (CSU) • Guidelines and resources Web site
State and National Issues • Federal: Effort to include provision about illegal file sharing in Higher Education Authorization Act. Industry wants to see more technical controls. • State: Proposed legislation to enhance the security breach notification law; does not change UC’s approach.
New Systemwide CIO • David Ernst appointed Associate Vice President for Information Resources and Communications and Chief Information Officer • Starts July 28 • Currently is CSU CIO • Held positions at UCSD and UCSF
2008 Larry Sautter Awards The Sautter Award was established in 2000 to recognizes and reward information technology projects that advance the University's mission of teaching, research, public service, and patient care, or that improve the effectiveness of business or administrative processes.
