SWBAT: • Create a strong thesis • Explain how Malcolm X’s childhood shaped his views on race relations in his adulthood.
Thesis: A few reminders and add-ons • What is a thesis? • Central argument of your paper • What should it include? • Topic, argument, and 2-4 claims (reasons why you believe that argument) • E.g. The death penalty needs to be abolished, as all people need an opportunity to repent and because death is an easy way out of a guilty conscience. • Topic? Argument? Claims?
Thesis: EACH “CLAIM” SHOULD BE ARGUABLE AND THOUGHTFUL (NOT OBVIOUS) • Bad: The death penalty needs to be a component of society because it kills people who have committed murder. • Could anyone argue with you that it kills people who have committed murder? • You’re not making a strong point if someone can’t reasonably argue with you about it. • Good: The death penalty needs to be abolished, as all people need an opportunity to repent and because death is an easy way out of a guilty conscience. • Could people argue with you that people don’t deserve the opportunity to repent? • Could people also argue with you that death is NOT an easy way out and worse than staying in jail?
Overall: Good or bad? Why? Talk to your partner for two minutes, then we’ll go through them. • Americans should have longer vacations because they will get to have more time to relax and spend time with family. • Americans should have longer vacations because Americans need less stress in their lives and it will make them more productive. • People need to become less dependent on technology because our society needs more human interaction and we need to keep jobs for humans rather than robots. • People need to become less dependent on technology, as they’re on their phones a lot and social interaction has declined.
