What change of state occurred? Did you sense hot or cold? How did the alcohol particles change? (turn into a gas, solid, plasma or stayed the same)
Phases/States of Matter States of Matter = the physical forms of a substance. There are 4! States of Matter depend on the motion of the particles - Matter is made of atoms (tiny particles) and are always bumping into each other. The motion is different for each state.
Solid Where do we see solids around us? • Solid is a state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed. • The particles of a solid are closely locked in position and can only vibrate.
Liquid • Liquid is a state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape. • A liquid takes the shape of its container. • The particles of a liquid are able to slide past each other. A liquid’s particles are more loosely connected than those of a solid. Where do we see liquids around us?
Gas • Gas is a state of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape. • The particles of a gas move about freely and collide randomly with each other. Where do we find gases around us?
Plasma • Plasma is a state of matter that starts as a gas and then becomes ionized. • Plasma consists of free-moving ions and electrons and can take on an electrical charge. • More than 99% of the matter in the universe is plasma. On Earth, natural plasmas are found in lightning and fire.
