Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sier de La Salle French Explorer
Life • Born in France in 1643 • In 1666 sailed to New France where he was given land. • Wanted to find a way to get to China so he set out on several expeditions.
No route • As La Salle realized there wasn’t a route to China, he changed his reason for exploring. • In 1685, during his 2nd exploration into Texas, he explored to help France gain more land. When he reached Texas, he set up French forts in Texas
Most of what we know about La Salle we learned from a man named Pierre Margry, who published a work called, Découvertes et établissements des Français dans l'ouest et dans le sud de l'Amérique septentrionale. Margry was a French historian who documented the history of France in North America. Margry took letters, journal entries, and reports that were written about the French exploration of North America and created the French document.
Effects of French and Spanish Exploration • Spain worried French would claim more land in Texas. • Spain decided to build Missions to protect Texas land from other countries
