What is Muscular Dystrophy? • A disease that causes progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement.
Types of Muscular Dystrophy • Duchenne • Facioscapulohumeral • Myotonic • Becker • Limb- gridle • Emery- Dreifuss • MyotoniaCongenita
Causes Absence of dystrophin, which is a protein involved in the integrity of muscle. Prolonged muscle spasms, cataracts, cardiac abnormalities, and endocrine disturbances.
Risk Factors • Inherited in an X- linked recessive pattern. • Mutations of the gene for the dystrophin protein.
Symptoms Causes boys to be unable to walk by the age of twelve, and then later on in life they usually need a respirator. It also causes delayed development of muscle motor skills, difficulty using one or more muscle groups, drooling, mental retardation, hypotonia, joint contractures, and scoliosis.
Diagnosis Usually muscular dystrophy starts slow and then progresses during their lifespan. Some of the children that are unfortunate to get this disease usually die during infancy while others live into adulthood with only some disabilities. Physical examination and your medical history will help determine which type of muscular dystrophy you have.
Diagnosis • In order to make an accurate diagnosis doctors either perform a DNA blood test or a muscle biopsy • Some of the tests they sometimes use are Serum CPK )electromyography), EMG, and ECG (electrocardiography)
Treatment • There are no treatment for muscular disease, although there are different treatments to slow down this disease. • Physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, orthopedic appliances used for support, and corrective orthopedic surgery and some of the treatments used to slow down MD
