Report of resistance in JapanFollowing resistance was reported in Kansai divisional meeting of the phytopathological society of Japan in Kyoto on October 28, 2006. Occurrence of Resistance Strains of Botrytis cinerea to Mepanipyrim. By Mr. Suzuki et al. (Agricultural Research Division, Mie Prefectural Science and Technology Promotion Center, & Kumiai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.)
Occurrence of Resistance Strains of Botrytis cinerea to Mepanipyrim. 950 isolates of Botrytis cinerea which were collected in the green houses of tomato and eggplant in Mie prefecture from 2002 through 2006 were subjected to mepanipyrim sensitivity test. 3 isolates which were found in 2005 showed less sensitivity against mepanipyrim as more than 100 ppm of MIC while the other isolates showed less than 3 ppm of MIC. Mepanipyrim showed less efficacy on the 3 isolates by bioassay on strawberry fruits and cucumber cotyledon. No resistance found including the same green house in 2006. This is the first report of mepanipyrim-resistant Botrytis cinerea in Japan.
2. Rice QoI issue The minutes of meeting Date: November 17 Place: BASF Agro, Tokyo Present: Manabu Itoh, Akihiro Tanaka / BASF; Haruko Sawada, Takashi Soeda / Bayer; Yasuo Sugasawa / Syngenta.
Back grounds 1. 3 QoI’s registered in Japan on rice; azoxystrobin (field application), metominostrobin (field application) and orysastrobin (nursery box application). 2. Rice blast is categorized as the pathogen showing a high risk of development of resistance.
Back grounds 3. Orysastrobin registered in Japan on August 16, 2006. This is the sole registered product on nursery box treatment. 1st practical application will be 2007 and may be widely used against rice diseases control in Japan. The application timing of QoI is longer than 2006 from nursery box to field. There will be a risk of duplicate application of QoI on rice from 2007 season.
Back grounds 4. Since the above situation will need resistance risk management, the chairman of QoI working group let Japan FRAC to propose recommendation of QoI on rice in Japan. 5. Japan FRAC recommended BASF, Bayer and Syngenta to have a meeting to solve this issue.
Confirmed and agreed points 1.Rice blast is the pathogen showing a high risk of development of resistance to fungicides. 2. It is required to have resistance risk management of QoI on rice in Japan. 3. FRAC strongly recommended to make resistance monitoring, because both fungicide (QoI) and pathogen (rice blast) risks are high.
Confirmed and agreed points 4. Up to 2006 season there is no report of resistance, lower susceptibility and less efficacy of QoI on rice diseases. 5. The disease pressure of rice blast in 2006 was relatively lower, and there was no heavy outbreak in Japan. 6. The 3 companies consider to make resistance monitoring in 2007 season, and agreed to have another meeting in appropriate timing.
3. Other items 1. Resistance report 3 reports are published in Japanese Journal of Phytopathology Vol. 72, No. 4, November 2006. It was arrived on December 1st, but by Japanese except title. It may take several months to translate and get permit by the authors. 2. Home page construction Cover page and the translation of pathogen risk list & FRAC code list 2 are almost completed. It would take some discussion the extent of translation of use recommendation.
3. Other items 3. MOA poster The posters are distributed to researchers (national, local government, company) by Japan FRAC member time by time, and have good reputation. Much of the stock will be distributed during the annual meeting of phytopathological society in April, 2007.
