What are mixtures? • When substances are combined without chemically reacting, mixtures are formed. • In a mixture, each component or part retains its own original properties.
Solutions are mixtures. Lemonade is a mixture. Coffee is a solution. In a solution, you observe only one single phase (solid or liquid or gas).
In a mixture, substances do not react chemically, thus they can be separated more easily by physical means. Pure water Evaporate water out! salt
Other examples… Since iron is magnetic, passing a magnet over the mixture will pull the magnet out! Filtration can be used to filter particles out of dirty water.
