Why do cells need to reproduce? • To grow • To make new cells that replace old cells. • These new daughter cells are exact copies of the parent cells. The DNA is also an exact copy.
The Cell Cycle Interphase + Mitosis
Interphase Cell grows, makes proteins, copies chromosomes and makes more organelles.
Mitosis A process of cell division.
Mitosis One parent cell divides to produce 2 identical daughter cells
Mitosis 4 Phases: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Prophase DNA coils up to form chromosomes.
Metaphase Chromosomes line up in middle of the cell.
Anaphase Sister chromatids are pulled apart.
Telophase Two daughter cells form. Each has 2 sets of chromosomes (one from mom and one from dad).
PMAT • P = Pre/Before • M = Middle • A = Apart • T = Two
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Assignment Fold a blank piece of copy paper into 4 equal squares. Label each square with one phase of Mitosis. Draw a picture of what the phase looks like, and write 2 sentences (in your own words) about the phase.
