Current ITU Resolutions on Gender • Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union, Resolution 70 (Rev. Antalya 2006) • Gender mainstreaming in ITU and promotion of gender equality towards all inclusive Information Societies • World Telecommunication Development Conference Resolution 55 (Doha, 2006) • Promoting gender equality towards all-inclusive information societies
Working Group on Gender Issues, Gender Unit and Special Initiatives Division • Task Force on Gender Issues became Working Group on Gender Issues • PP Res 70 (rev Antalya 2006) cites WTDC Resolution 44 (Istanbul, 2002) which converted the task force on gender issues into the Working Group on Gender Issues • PP Res 70 (rev Antalya 2006) called for a full time gender staff member to deal with ITU gender human resource issues • Gender Unit became Special Initiatives Division with five special initiatives • Resolution 55 (Doha, 2006) refers to WGGI and Gender Unit • Resolution language and current organization don’t match
Current BDT Gender Activities • National projects, funded by the ITU Development Fund, to create multipurpose community telecentres benefitting women in Africa • Collection of sex-disaggregated data • Involvement of women rapporteurs in ITU-D Study Groups • ICT-enabled career training. E.g. APEC Women’s Ebiz Training with the Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC) • National projects to provide basic ICT literacy training for women and girls (Tanzania and Zambia) funded by the Netherlands and Czech Republic
Planned Activities • Build Synergies between different special Initiatives through Connect a School, Connect a Community • Develop ICT-enabled career and literacy training for women, in partnership with other organizations • Language literacy • Numeracy and • Basic ICT literacy training • Disseminate this vocational and literacy training material through Connect a School, Connect a Community toolkit platform for use in schools, telecentres, etc., as well as ITU Academy by ITU members and NGOs
Issues to Consider • Use of mobile phones as platform for access • Need for best practices on creating women’s ICT centres • Need for new working methods and synergies
