The new Higher Apprenticeship/BSc(Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice DegreeUVAC Conference, Leeds26th November 2013 Simon Witts, CEO Aviation Skills Partnership
1. What led to the creation of this programme?2. What have we created ?3. Apprenticeship and Degree?4. Summary
Industry has a desire to increase career access opportunities in the aviation sector; starting with Pilots, ensuring that the right people can access the jobs People are finding it harder to access the sector, equally, the industry is not getting enough of the right applicants for jobs Linking the education system to the aviation sector career pathways creates the opportunity to address many issues Government, who also has a desire to support skills growth in aviation, can start to support skills programmes
A unique and innovative BSc(Hons) Degree that also matches the requirements of a Higher Apprenticeship and is delivered at the approved training organisation/airline Access to Government Student and Maintenance finance support The first jointly validated programme delivered by CTC Aviation and Middlesex University Other versions are on the way e.g. Helicopter, Flight Instructor, UAS
The three ways to enrol: Type 1: New entrants: for those who wish to start now, apply directly or via UCAS (X90N). MPL version available from January 2014 Type 2: Direct Honours entry: available from January 2014 for cadets who are currently in training or have just completed at e.g. FATPL level - submit Expression of Interest form via ASP website Type 3: Existing pilots: available from January 2014 for fully qualified Pilots - submit Expression of Interest form via ASP website
If they are all the same why have we created a Higher Apprenticeship as well as a Degree? Without the higher apprenticeship framework that sits behind the training that takes place, employers and cadets cannot access the benefits of apprenticeships.
What are the opportunities to become an Apprentice? The framework that has been developed is now available for employers to use to employ Apprentices At this initial stage airlines are most likely to recruit cadets who have already started their training, so the immediate opportunities are likely to be for those who are training with an organisation which is delivering this programme
Summary We have achieved what we set out to do We have a Higher Apprenticeship / BSc(Hons) Degree all delivered through the standard airline training The first scheme is available to enrol at CTC: Type 1: New entrants Type 2: Direct Honours entry Type 3: Existing pilots Other schemes are in work
