Complete as we go… The function of the flower in a plant is to allow _________________________. The function of the flower in a plant is to allow REPRODUCTION.
Complete as we go… The process of the male part of a plant fertilizing the female part of a plant, through pollen, is called _____________________. The process of the male part of a plant fertilizing the female part of a plant, through pollen, is called POLLINATION.
Complete as we go… Petals: Attract insects and bees to the flower for pollination
Complete as we go… Sepals: Green, leaf-like structures around the petals to protect the growing flower
Complete as we go… Stamen: the male reproductive structure, holds the ANTHER
Complete as we go… Anther: Produces the pollen than contains the sperm (to fertilize female part)
Complete as we go…. Pistil: The female reproductive structure, in center of flower
Complete as we go… Ovary: At the bottom of the pistil, contains the ovules which hold the eggs
Pollination Steps 1. _________ attract, birds, bees, or other animals that can carry _________, called _____________. 2. ___________ from the ______________ rubs off on the _____________________. 3. The pollinator carries that ________________ to the _____________ of the same or a different flower (“______________________”) 4. The _______________ of that flower grows into the fruit or vegetable
Pollination Steps 1. PETALS attract, birds, bees, or other animals that can carry POLLEN, called POLLINATORS. 2. ___________ from the ______________ rubs off on the _____________________. 3. The pollinator carries that ________________ to the _____________ of the same or a different flower (“______________________”) 4. The _______________ of that flower grows into the fruit or vegetable

Complete as we go…. • When fertilization occurs the ovary grows into the fruit or vegetable. • The length of night or dark period controls flowering.
Write in Notebook.. • Plants need these 4 key ingredients:
Video on Photosynthesis • Discovery Education: Oxygen and Green Plants: The Process of Photosynthesis
What does photosynthesis mean? • Photo = light • Synthesis = putting things together • Photosynthesis = putting things together with light
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK • Reactants (what goes in) • What plants use! Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) + ENERGY from sunlight
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK • Products (what comes out) • What plants produce! Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6)
Photosynthesis • Photosynthesis is how plants use sunlight to make oxygen and sugar. Reactants (what goes in) Products (what comes out) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) +ENERGY from sunlight Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6)
BrainPOP! http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/photosynthesis/preview.weml
My favorite! Mr. Lee!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYoHcEShHsw But I like this one better…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CK4z4MDXuE
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK… • We need O₂ for 2 reasons… • Respiration: Using our lungs to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide • Cellular Respiration: A chemical reaction that uses oxygen to break down stored energy from glucose; happens in cells
So what happens when you breathe? BUT IT’S NOT THIS SIMPLE…. Oxygen (O2) goes in Carbon dioxide (CO2) goes out
Discovery Ed Video • Cellular Respiration: Releasing the Stored Energy in Glucose • Think about these questions when watching: • What happens to glucose in the presence of oxygen? • How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related?
Respiration – Write in Notebook • Respiration is the process that breaks down sugar to make energy. It happens in animal cells and plant cells. • Cellular Respiration Equation: Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6) Reactants (what goes in) Products (what comes out) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) + ENERGY!!
So where does all this oxygen come from?? • Remember, it is due to green plants doing PHOTOSYNTHESIS!
Which of the following statements are true? • Photosynthesis is like respiration in reverse • Photosynthesis produces CO2 • Photosynthesis needs sunlight
Copy the TWO statements that are true in your notebook • Photosynthesis is like respiration in reverse • Photosynthesis produces CO2 • Photosynthesis needs sunlight
What is Transpiration? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8da0eyeTzBo&list=UUQNcNznbrboyLfH5y4X73Qw • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBsdQWMnj9s&list=UUQNcNznbrboyLfH5y4X73Qw
Transpiration • Outside of Leaves: epidermis, waxy cuticle and stomata = prevent water loss. • Guard cells surround and control the size of the openings in the stomata (control transpiration) • The loss of water through the stomata is called transpiration.
