The Louisiana Department of Education in partnership with the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) provides Louisiana middle and high school students with access to standards-based high school courses delivered by highly qualified Louisiana teachers through the Louisiana Virtual School (a BESE 8(g) funded Exemplary Program). Eligibility, Participation and Enrollment Any student who attends an approved public or nonpublic school in one of the eight BESE regions is eligible to participate if the school is in compliance with Brumfield vs. Dodd. Nonpublic schools must have a sectarian questionnaire on file in the BESE office.
LVS Details • Materials and Technology cost of $150 per course/per student payable by the District/Diocese/Nonpublic • Districts must sign an LVS Legal Agreement • Nonpublic schools must sign an LVS Legal Agreement and include a Board of Resolution

Who are the LVS instructors? • 16 fulltime and 80 + adjunct instructors • Highly qualified as instructional leaders and experienced as online instructors • Staff member solely responsible for PD • Individualized PD plan for each instructor • Combination of online and f2f PD • Annual faculty summit • Instructors assessed annually

How can your school participate? • Ensure that District has submitted the LVS Legal Agreement. • Schools must designate a licensed Teacher as the LVS site facilitator (facilitator must hold a valid Louisiana teaching license). • The LVS Facilitator must apply for, or already have, an active account in the LVS portal. • The LVS Facilitator registers students via the facilitator portal. • The LVS Facilitator attends an LVS-led facilitator training.
What must the school and/or district provide? • Daily site facilitation • Facilitator serves as primary contact with LVS teachers and administrative staff • Active engagement & proctoring students • Liaison between student, LVS teacher, and parent • Receives, manages and returns all course supplies and materials to LSMSA • Computer and high speed Internet access • Site-based technical support • District must guarantee that each course’s software and technical requirements are met

LVS Credit Recovery • Must meet Bulletin 741 §2324. Credit Recovery B.1. Students earning Carnegie credit in a credit recovery course must have previously taken and failed the course. • Credit recovery courses offered throughout the 2010-2011 school year • Diagnostic assessments to determine proficiency • Content grouped in smaller sections to increase retention • Provide synchronous and asynchronous online tutoring • Must pass final exam in order to receive credit
