Definition of “Voluntary” Initiated/requested solely by the student-athlete. No reporting back. Attendance/participation not recorded. No penalty for electing not to participate. No recognition for participation. No coach present (unless utilizing the safety exception).
Safety Exception Coach may be present during voluntary individual workouts in the institution’s regular practice facility when the student-athlete uses equipment in that sport. The coach may provide safety or skill instruction but cannot conduct the individual’s workout.
Voluntary Activities Please use common sense when discussing voluntary activities with student-athletes. If a student-athlete participates due to pressure from a staff member, they could make a claim that it wasn’t voluntary. To protect yourself, document in writing (email, letter, etc.) explaining the voluntary nature of the activity. No staff member (including strength and conditioning) should be REQUIRING student-athletes to report back a voluntary workout (this includes summer).
Mandatory Activities Student-athletes are the final determination as to whether an activity is mandatory. Protect yourself by documenting accurate CARA logs and educating your student-athletes when activities are not mandatory.
Countable Athletically-Related Activities • Generally, athletically-related activities that are required by the coaching staff WILL count against the daily and weekly limits.
