Ionic Compounds LEQ What are the types of ionic compounds?
Ionic Compounds All ionic compounds are defined as the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles. The (+) ion called the cationand the (-) ion called the anion. Two types of ionic compounds: Binary Ionic Compounds Ternary Ionic Compounds
Ionic Compounds Constants for ALL ionic compounds: • cations or (+) ions are ALWAYS written first. 2. Net charge of any ionic compound MUST be ZERO. The positive and negative must be equal in number and cancel each out.
Binary Ionic Compounds Binary: Ionic compound made-up of one metal (+) and one non-metal (-). ie:
Binary Ionic Compound Assign Oxidation Numbers: 1. Groups 1A 2A 3A 5A 6A 7A 8A 1+ 2+ 3+ 3- 2- 1- 0 2. Transitional Metal normally 2+ except Cu1+, Ag1+ and Au1+ 3. Transitional Metals ONLY use Roman Numerals to indicate the (+) charge:
Binary Ionic Compounds How do you write a binary ionic compound. • Identify the cation (+) and the anion (-). • Assign the oxidation number. • Criss Cross the numerical charge NOT the charge itself. • Simplify and ensure that the net charge is equal to zero.
Binary Ionic Compound Sampler Al and S Br and Na K and S Fe(III) and O Hg(IV) and Cl Cr (II) and O
Naming Binary Ionic Compounds The first name is the name of the metal (+) ion. NOTE: For ALL transitional metals you MUST include a Roman Numeral with the name. The second name is the name of the anion which drops the ending and adds –ide. NOTE: Use a reverse Criss Cross to assign oxidation numbers in most compounds. CAUTION
Ternary Ionic Compounds Ternary compounds are made-up of at least one polyatomic ion. Note: You MUST know your polyatomic ions. Constant: • Net charge must equal zero • More than one polyatomic ion MUST be in parenthesis.
Ternary Ionic Compounds Steps to write a ternary ionic compound: 1. Determine the cation (+) and the anion (-). 2. Assign the oxidation numbers 3. Criss cross numerical values. 4. Simplify and ensure net charge of zero. 5. More than one poly, put in ( ).
Ternary Ionic Compound Sampler Potassium and sulfate Ammonium and chlorine Iron (III) and chlorate
Ternary Ionic Compound Sampler Sodium and bicarbonate Calcium and hydroxide Copper (I) perchlorate
Naming Ternary Ionic Compounds First name is the name of the cation(+) ion Note: For transitional metal a Roman Numeral is required. Note: If the first ion is a polyatomic ion, then the name is the name of the poly ion. Second name is the name of the polyatomic ion. Note: If the second name is monoatomic, then drop the ending and add –ide.
Naming Polyatomic Ion Sampler Mg(ClO2)2 Ba(OH)2 Ni2(CrO4)3 NaC2H3O2
Zinc (II) acetate Sodium phosphate Sodium phosphite Tin (IV) nitrate Lead (IV) dichromate
