Train the trainers for ICPC Didactics for presentations (and interactive modules) Dr. Marion Tobler York (UK)
The constelation Play a constelation instead of a (boring) presentation round! (Requested time: 15 to 20 minutes for 3-4 constellations) Procedure • People line up according to a gradiant (line) • People find their place in 4 quadrants Advantage • People have to communicate • People stick to requested information • Include a fun question
Some examples • Basic research – applied research (line) • Number of ICPC countries visited (line) • Science type: • natural sciences (I) • technical sciences (II) • social sciences (III) • political sciences (IV) • Shoe-number, Music (classic – rapp) (line) • Didactic/ methodic knowlede (line) • Type of organisation (private – public)
The moderator’s tasks • Clarify purpose • Create a hospital place • Explore questions that matter • Encourage everyone’s contribution • Connect different perspectives • Listen for insights and share discoveries • Report balanced
How can you balance teams? • Set a list of criteria (disciplines, learning types etc. private/public) • Set rules for priorities • Do not forget the gender dimension and soft criteria • Name leaders and start nomination process
How do you prepare your slides? • Set a catchy title (maybe a question ?) • Keep with minimum information • Include pictures, graphs, tables • Structure each page • Avoid small fonts • Harmonise different slide sources • Give conclusions
Which learning type are you? Direct experience acting processing perceiving reflecting Abstract concepts
4 learning types What if? Seek to know the Possibilities Be on the cutting edge of social progress S: Innovation and action for change W: digging into the details Why? Seek to know the underlaying values Be involved, bring harmony S: People’ skills, reflection W: working under pressure, Taking risks Direct experience acting reflecting Hoe does this work? Seek to know the Usability of the theory Productivity, competence S: action, getting things done W: people’s skills What? Seek to know the What the expert knows Intellectual recognition S: concepts amd theory, reflection W: creativity Abstract concepts
Learning evolvement What if integrating experiencing Why acting reflecting What How conceptual
Ways of communication • Non verbal: personality, attitude, behavior • Para-verbal: body language, mimics • Verbal: spoken word
«On the stage» • Prepare yourself mentally for the situation • Write little cards (for your memory) • Get a picture of the audience • Organise an «ancre» in the audience • Dress appropriate to «overdressed» • Prepare for the technical equipment • Seek for eye contact • Smile
Do’s and dont’s with ICPCs Avoid Go for Inquire on cultural specialties Talk from researcher to researcher Ask for details on special circumstances Seek for bridging «walk in the other’s footstep» Accept different social priorities Make friends with female researchers • Conflicts on mentality • Racism • Jokes on religions • Unapropriate dressing • Unapropriate (western) behavior (as a woman) • «Educating» Dr. Marion Tobler Summerschool on ICPCs 26- 27 June 2012 York 19
How do games fit in didactics? • Games are not just for fun, but fun is allowed! • Games make use of of brain parts, which we often neglect, hence memory will be improvedby using them! • Reputation of games is often not serious enough, so rename games in experient, trial, task
Identify tasks and partners required • Start from the topic • Identify (research) tasks – outcomes expected • Identify special requirements (SME, countries, players) • Which competence would it need? • Who could be asked? -> fill in your own network -> identify gaps
Topic example: green urban infrastructure (GrUI) Areas Concern What are the Playgrounds? What are the discilines and competences seeked? Ecosystem service Players Who are the experts and stakeholders ?
What are the playgrounds Areas Concern Ecosystem service Environmental aspects Economic aspects Socio-cultural aspects Health aspects Players
What are the disciplines andcompetences seeked? Areas Concern Non-environmental functions Biodiversity Ecosystem service Sustainable use of GrUI Innovation potential Planning and governance approaches Players
Who are the experts and stakeholders? Ecosystem service Areas Concern Players Cities (owners) Regions (policy) Users (interests) Service providers (urban landscaping, IT-tools for planning…)

Tasks and possible partners Do not forget dissemination (use of the results) and management tasks
The one page proposal Dr. Marion Tobler Summerschool on ICPCs 26- 27 June 2012 York 29
What problem are you trying to solve? talk policy and market What is the Global / European priority? Is it only a local problem? Is knowledge, solution, service already available? (state of the art) Does it go beyond? Why now? (what were barriers so far?) think economy and society Why this consortium? Are you the best people to do this work? Whatmakesa good proposal?
What is a brain walk? • Call it a walk through different subtopics for brainstorming! • Procedure: • Write subtopics in the middle of a flipchart • Distribute flipchart on the walls • Ask participants to stay with each flipchart for 5 -10 minutes and add what comes in their minds
EU Contract Structure of the project At least 3 legalentities from 3 different EU MS / AC Coordinator • Alsofunded • International cooperationpartner countries (ICPC) • International organisations: WHO .. Consortium agreement WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 IND 1 UNI 1 SME 2 INT 1 UNI 2 UNI 1 UNI 2 UNI 3 UNI 3 SME 2 Not funded Industrialisedthird countries: USA, Japan, Canada, etc. to bechecked case by case INT 1 SME 1 SME 1 IND 1 SME 2
Do’s and dont’s • Group • bundles of activities • Case studies • Innovation areas • Timely subsequent work • Dissemination activities • Trainings • Make horizontal WPs for: • Management • Communication • Standardisation • Interdisziplinary contributions • Development and testing of methods Do not mix different activities forget dissemination forget tasks of the Workprogramme forget representing expected impacts
Get to know your partners Compile a poster Aim: Find out about your common and different preferences What: Draw a circle in the center for common activities und use the space around for different activities of the participants. How: • Address all day activities such as hobbies • Address research activities
Sharing expertise on ICPCsa brainwalk Why? • Benefit from other’s experiences What? Focus on specific countries • Write names of countries in the middle of a poster How? • See brainwalk
