CoastWatchData Distribution: Enhancements for VIIRS Ron Vogel, Michael Soracco & the CoastWatch Team OCPOP Meeting December 9, 2011
CoastWatch will produce regional and global products at full VIIRS resolution
Full-resolution global products • Due to file size, global full-res products will be available as global sectors: 24 sectors = globe
Data Search Interfaces • Enhancements developed from review of existing geographic data search interfaces: OBPG, LAADS, CLASS, etc. • So that data search & order meets the expectations of the science community and other users • Upgrade existing interface • New level 2 interface
Upgrade Existing Interface Search all product types: existing regions level-2 swath global: reduced & sector Geographic search for swaths & sectors via clickable map New search options: Temporally binned products (daily, weekly, monthly) Operational vs. Experimental products Check availability: Check whether data still available on server for time range of interest (eliminates “no hits”) http & ftp file-listings still available
New Level 2 Interfaceuses Google Maps • Choose month/day from calendar, then granule of interest from map • Level 2 browse imagery: to guide user’s data selection (new for CoastWatch) • Updates on frequent basis, so currently available NRT granules are shown • Warning: VIIRS granules are 71 seconds – smaller than MODIS 5-min granules
Additional Data Distribution Features • Data cart: all selected files staged on FTP site • Data subscription: continuous staging of pre-selected data choices • Sector mosaicking • Spatial subsettingfor mosaicked sectors and single sectors
Some additional development ideas for discussion (as yet unexplored) • Queries for data older than available on CW server are routed from CW Search Interface to CLASS. CLASS fills the order and supplies the data to the user. • If sized appropriately, CW can hold multiple years of data of experimental products to support ocean science objectives like climate studies: • Daily full-res global for 10 years (2 products): TBD • Daily full-res legacy regions 10 yrs (2 prods): 8 TB NOTE: operational products for mission are stored at CLASS
