1 You Shall Be of Sound Mind “be ye therefore of sound mind” 1 Pet. 4:7 asv Make good decisions “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Luke 12:15 NKJV
2 You Shall Be of Sober Spirit Unto Prayer “and be sober unto prayer” 1 Pet. 4:7 asv Calm in midst of upheavals “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine: Oh what a fortaste of glory divine.” - Hymn Lack of assurance is to lack faith in our Assurer. Do not let doubt overcome our assurance
3 You Shall Be Fervent in Love “above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves” 1 Pet. 4:8 asv • Fervent = intense • Mutual love • 1 John 4:20,21 - Love God then love brother also • Important during trials and persecution
4 You Shall Be Hospitable “using hospitality one to another without murmuring:” 1 Pet. 4:9 asv • Hospitality = show kindness to others • Generous to strangers • Gal. 6:10 - do good unto all men • “without murmuring” - complaint
5 You Shall Be Good Stewards “according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” 1 Pet. 4:10 asv • Unselfish • Do not bury our talents • All we have is a gift from God
6 You Shall Speak God’s Word “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God;” 1 Pet. 4:11 • God has spoken to us through His son • He chose apostles and prophets as messengers • Teach only what God has given • John 12:48
7 You Shall Endure Fiery Trials “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:” 1 Pet. 4:12 • Not unusual to suffer • John 15:18-20 • Do not let your faith fail • Psalms 27:1-6
8 You Shall Not be Ashamed to Suffer as a Christian “but if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed;” 1 Pet. 4:16 asv • Should not be ashamed of Gospel - Rom. 1:16 • It is the eternal word of God • Our critics will be judged by the Bible • 1 Pet. 1:22-25
9 You Shall Glorify God “but let him glorify God in this name.” 1 Pet. 4:16 asv • World tries to ridicule and shame • Time to rejoice • Better to be persecuted than to be a persecutor • Acts 5:41 “worthy to suffer”
10 You Shall Commit your soul Unto God “Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.” 1 Pet. 4:19 Safe haven for the Christian Whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice, even unto death “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” Hebrews 13:5
