  1. CACHE Bio Task Force Members • Frank Doyle (UCSB) • Vassily Hatzimanikatis (Northwestern) • Mike Henson (UMass) • Marianthi Ierapetritou (Rutgers) • Claire Komives (San Jose State) • Costas Maranas (Penn State) • Tunde Ogunnaike (Delaware) • Bob Parker (Pitt) • Chen Su (Eli Lilly) • Dane Wittrup (MIT) New members

  2. Past Committee Activities • Organization of FOSBE conference (Aug. 2005) • White paper on bio in control curriculum • Parker, Henson, Doyle 2004 • Participation in Frontiers Proposal • systems component (Edgar, PI), submitted 2005 • Survey of ChE departments for bio/computing • Areas of separations, kinetics, control, design • Relatively few replies

  3. New Members’ Initiatives • Marianthi • Curriculum reform grant from NSF • Bio component in curriculum, esp. design course • Opportunity: Design modules for CACHE to advertise • Dane • Textbook on biological kinetics • ChE and bioengineering audiences w/ MATLAB case studies • Opportunity: adapt modules for CACHE • OpenCourseWare initiative at MIT • Opportunity: cross-link on CACHE WWW pages • Claire • NSF proposal for CCLI on WWW repository for bio problems/solutions

  4. Web repository to enhance undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum with biological applications (CCLI proposal) Summary of project • Exploratory project phase: Proposed web site with 225 solved problems for the material and energy balance (MEB) course to incorporate bioX into the course with background material pages to provide depth in biological systems related to specific problems • Editorial review of problems submitted by bioX faculty + User rating/reviews of problems • Advisory board to propose curricular and other enhancements • Password protection of solutions accessible to faculty only • Workshop at SJSU to train faculty without formal education in bioX to incorporate the problems into their MEB courses to be delivered by E. J. Fernandez in Summer ‘06 • Ten beta-test institutions are committed to use the materials. • Comprehensive project will expand the web site for thermodynamics, transport/unit operations, kinetics, process safety, process control, laboratory and plant design undergraduate courses. How can CACHE contribute? • Encourage participation by non-bioX faculty. (Arm-twisting strategy) • Contribution of simulation modules relevant to courses • Input by participation with advisory board • Dissemination of project /results through CACHE conference sessions • Other??

  5. Path Forward -Activities • Renew survey of content on WWW • Kinetics (Henson/Wittrup) • Dynamics/Control (Parker/Ogunnaike) • Design/Separations (Maranas/Ierapetritou) • Thermo (Hatzimanikatis/Su) • Material Balance (Komives/Doyle) • Survey Curriculum Funding Initiatives (other than NSF/CCLI) – with goal of proposal by late 2005 • DoEduc – Ierapetritou • NIH – Hatzimanikatis • NSF – Parker/Ogunnaike • DOE – Maranas • Survey bioengineering/biomedical engineering departments on respective campuses to determine opportunities for synergy in course module development

  6. Path Forward -Timeline • FOSBE meeting (majority of team will attend) – August • Collect www content for various course areas • Plan for proposal, scope, target • July telecon • Report on activities • Funding initiatives • Bioengineering opportunities • Meeting at AIChE Annual Meeting – November • Proposal strategy session
