  2. Habitat for Humanity 80 countries 4 area offices 1,500 affiliates in the U.S. 550 international affiliates 3,000 communities around the world 750,000 Volunteers 500,000 partner families have worked with Habitat since 1976, totaling 2.5 million people served through the work of Habitat for Humanity.

  3. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Vision : A world where everyone has a decent place to live. Mission : Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Since 1976, HFH International (HFHI) has built over 550,000 houses, providing more than 3 million people in over 80 countries with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Habitat for Humanity in India (HFH India), began its operations in 1983, and is one of the largest country programmes within the Habitat family. Habitat India operates resource centres known as Habitat Resource Centres (HRC’s), providing the focal point for local activity, in Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai . HFH India has successfully served over 43854 families till now through its housing programme across the country, including 13,000 houses under the tsunami response.

  4. India Country Profile and Programs

  5. A WORLD WHERE EVERYONE HAS A DECENT PLACE TO LIVE. Building Homes, Transforming Communities, Changing Lives. HOUSING CRISIS In India: 40 million families lack adequate housing in India 60% of India’s population lives in inhuman conditions 108 million dwellings are temporary or dilapidated

  6. Focus Programs Housing Construction and Repair Habitat builds homes, communities and hope by building decent and affordable houses, improving homes and giving the less fortunate access to resources to live in dignified and healthy communities. Disaster Response and Risk Mitigation Habitat identifies and provides long-term solutions for families living in disaster-prone areas through the Disaster Preparedness and Response Initiatives and Resettlement and Rehabilitation Program. Water and Sanitation Habitat is helping to address the problems caused by poor water and sanitation, by including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) education in the community development and housing projects, thereby, helping families to improve their health, productivity and general well being. Social Housing Microfinance Habitat helps strengthen communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region by working with partners to give families in need access to small, no interest loans for building or renovating simple, decent and affordable homes. Housing Support Services Habitat provides training, direct consultation and quality services that enable an individual or a family to access decent and affordable housing in terms of secure tenure, basic services, and shelter durability and space, and make shelter-related improvements which address health, safety and livelihood.

  7. THE HABITAT MODEL Habitat believes the best way to tackle poverty is to work with families in need and provide a - hand up, not a - hand out! Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit. Families repay through affordable, no-profit mortgage loans payable in affordable installments over 3-6 years . Monthly mortgage payments go into a “Fund for Humanity” a local revolving fund to be used to build more Habitat homes. Partner families also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor – sweat equity – into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Sweat equity invested by home partners allows homeowners to work alongside neighbors and volunteers, increasing the pride of ownership and fostering the development of positive relationships within a community. Involvement of volunteers in house building is a unique aspect of Habitat’s housing programs that also ensures lower housing cost. Every year, Habitat India hosts more than 40 domestic and international teams of volunteers ranging from school students, corporate employees and institutional partners.
