Acquisition of Knowledge using Web 2.0 tools • What is mLearning ? • “the acquisition of any knowledge and skill using mobile technology, anywhere, anytime, that results in an alteration of behaviour.” • (Geddes, 2004) • Young learners are having their learning styles reshaped by rapid advances in information technology. (Dede, 2005) • These emerging learning styles include: • fluency in multiple media and simulation – based virtual settings, • communal learning involving diverse, tacit, • situated experiences and a balance between experiential learning, • guided mentoring • collective reflection. Acquisition of Knowledge using Web 2.0 tools • Seventy-three percent of students surveyed in 2006 undertaking VTE training said that e-learning would in the future improve their employment outcomes (Australian Flexible Learning Framework 2006). • This study further stated, that by integrating information and communications technologies (ICT) into VTE it becomes more flexible, more responsive to client needs, improves quality and access, and fosters innovation. Cognitive Apprenticeship Model • At the 2004 NCVER conference, the cognitive apprenticeship model was put forward as a way to improve the learning for apprentices undertaking the majority of their apprenticeship training in the workplace. • http://www.ncver.edu.au/files/tr14Chan.rtf • mLearning technology, in particular the use of mobile phones, (which includes mp3 downloads) provides a possible way for cognitive apprenticeship models to be introduced into: • workplace based learning • evidence gathering • eportfolio compilation • formative and summative assessment activities. Cognitive Apprenticeship Model mLearning technology, in particular the use of mobile technology in conjunction with Web 2.0 services, provides a possible way for cognitive apprenticeship models to be introduced into workplace-based learning. Dabbagh & Bannan-Ritland (2005) provided guidelines on how to use cognitive apprenticeship models in on-line learning: Focus on mastery within the context of the knowledge domain:- This example could be achieved by: Developing iLectures on practical tasks and hints / tips for conducting simple ‘experiments’ can be conveyed via Web 2.0 tools using the Mp3 players /iPods or video ipod functions. These web 2.0 tools and services have the ability to support the acquisition of knowledge in situ of what to do or how to complete a practical task. WSITAFE NSW

The difference between merely downloading information from a website, such as a piece of software or music file, and the podcast, is the subscription function called syndication using RSS feeds. 7. Cognitive Apprenticeship Model Barrett (2005) summarises her philosophy towards the introduction of the use of new technology well when she states: “when learning new tools, use familiar tasks; when learning new tasks, use familiar tools.” WSI TAFE NSW

Convert the audacity file to an MP3 file using Lame encoder 3.Import the file into a podcast website called www.podomatic.com 4.Subscribeto the website by syndicating its RSS feed into itunes 5.Download it into your iPod and or an iRiver 6.Tune into a designated radio frequency eg. AM or FMradio station using an itrip and play back to the group

9. Cognitive Apprenticeship Model Master/Apprentice Model Using the Old TAFE model based on the behaviourist theory of learning Applying cognitive apprenticeship principles to mLearning. The arrival of the digital age has seen several learning theories advanced to encompass the use of technology and networks into educational theory. The work of Brown(2002) with his treatise on how the ‘web’ has changed the way people work and learn and Seimens’ (2005) connectivism learning theory have had particular influence on teaching practice. Chan (2005) states that the basic precepts of cognitive apprenticeships are still relevant despite the move from traditional face to face instruction towards eLearning or mLearning. WSI TAFE NSW

10. Cognitive Apprenticeship Model • The principles of cognitive apprenticeships (Brown, Colllins & Duguid, 1989) include the six teaching methods: • Modelling • Coaching • Scaffolding • Articulation • Reflection • Exploration. WSI TAFE NSW

Cognitive Apprenticeship Model • Conclusion • Using iPods & iTrips as knowledge acquisition tools for problem-based learning in the workplace is just one example that can help scaffold the apprentice from one activity to the next. • It could be argued that using video ipods and ilectures are often better explained via pictures, videos and podcast coaching than through lengthy handouts. • More importantly its about motivating learners to be engaged with their learning using familiar tools to learn new tasks!
