The Analects • Written Text of Confucius’ teachings • He is the “Master” in the text • Contains Maxims- similar to proverbs- short sayings that contain a general truth or give practical advice.
Read excerpt from Analects p. 591 • As you read- paraphrase each of the six maxims in your notebook.
Two main components • li • ren
Li • “good manners” or “etiquette” • universal harmony • no need for physical sanctions, laws, or punishment
Jen • Relationship between "two persons” • Treat others the way you want to be treated. • each role in the hierarchy of social relations had clearly defined duties • mutual responsibility – “Know your role”
Five relationships • father-child • ruler-subject • husband-wife • elder brother-younger brother • friend-friend
Matching Activity • Match the Maxims with the real life situations that would apply. • Complete the chart with what each means • Write which relationship each situation involves for 1-4.
Work on Maps • Finish China Maps for tomorrow.
