Patricians vs. Plebeians
WOMEN SLAVES Disenfranchised • Slaves made up 1/3 of the population • Slaves were mostly war captives who were owned by citizens and had no rights Women could not participate in government decisions, office or voting. Women were seen the same as children
Plebeians • The Plebeians were the lower class “common folk” of Rome. • The Plebeians included the regular people in ancient Rome from well-to-do tradesmen all the way down to the very poor.
Plebeians • Plebeians were citizens w/ rights to vote • Barred from holding office • Many Plebeians were in heavy debt to the Patricians.
Patricians • Patricians were the upper class “nobility” of Rome. • Patricians inherited their power and social status • Ancestry gave patricians authority
Patricians • Patrician families controlled all society—politics, religion, economics, military • Magistrates, judges, and priests mostly came from the Patrician order • Maintained power through economic suppression.
Patricians Plebeians vs. Invaders are coming and we need soldiers. The Plebeians should fight for us. Plebeians, you WILL go to war and fight for ROME!!!! For rights, we will fight for Rome. I bet those Patricians will want us to go to war for them. We will not fight until we are given more rights!!!! Ok ok, we will give you rights if you help protect us.
Results • Tribunes were finally developed to protect the rights of plebeians from unfair patricians • The tribunes had veto power over other branches of government.
The Twelve Tables • Official laws that ensured that plebeians could not be surprised and would know the law. • The Twelve Tables were posted in the Roman Forum for all to see.
