Stage 1:The Egg... • The first stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is the egg. • The egg is as big as a pinhead. • The tiny orb laid by a female butterfly. • Eggs are usually laid on the underside of leaves-they hatch into larvae
Stage 2: The Larva... • The second stage in the lifecycle of a butterfly is the larva. • It is also called caterpillar. • This stage hatches from the egg. • The larvae spend time eating, growing and molting.
Stage 3: The Pupa... • The third stage in the lifecycle of a butterfly is the pupa. • It is the stage in a butterfly’s life when it is enclosed in a chrysalis and undergoes metamorphosis into the adult, winged form.
Stage 4: The adult... • The last stage in the lifecycle of the butterfly is the adult. • When the butterfly comes out of the chrysalis, it looks damp and crumpled. • Adults do not eat; they only sip liquids through a straw-like proboscis.
