RELATED TO VIOLATIONS OF DRUG, ALCOHOL OR TOBACCO USE. • Athletes of the senior high school shall abide by the WIAA Rules of Eligibility in regards to conduct throughout the calendar year. Current state statute and school policy will serve as the standard criteria for determining if a violation has occurred. Athletic code violations include the use or possession of tobacco products (smoking or chewing), alcohol or controlled substances. An athlete receiving communion at a religious service would not be considered in violation of the athletic code. However, toasting with alcohol at weddings, graduations or other ceremonies would be considered a violation of the athletic code. Athletes are directed not to place themselves in the presence of others who are illegally possessing or using alcohol, tobacco, or any controlled substances. This policy is not meant to include public sponsored events supervised by responsible adults following all applicable laws. It is the expectation of this code that an athlete leave, disassociate him/herself and not knowingly linger in the presence of others illegally possessing alcohol, tobacco, or controlled substances. Eligibility and Ineligibility
The WIAA is against the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids and other performance enhancing substances (PES).

Violations Violations of the Athletic Code will be cumulative during an athletes career. However, an athlete who completes one year without violation, “wins back” his/his status prior to the last violation. Any student who voluntarily turns him/herself in for a first violation of this code shall have the penalty reduced by ten percent of the original amount specified in the code. If ten percent results in a fraction of a contest, standard rounding rules will apply. For example, a students penalty, when reduced by ten percent results in a 1.5 contest suspension. According to standard rounding rules, the student would serve a two contest suspension. However, if a students penalty, when reduced by 10%, results in a 1.4 contest suspension, a one contest suspension would be served.
First Violation A first violation results in a suspension from athletic competition for a period of 20% of the contests based on the regular season of the sport. Any remaining percentage of that suspension not served shall be recalculated and applied to the next sport in which that athlete participates in and completes. If the suspension carries over into the WIAA tournament series, the athlete will miss the entire tournament series. This clause pertains to team tournament as well as the individual tournament series. Any remaining percentage of that violation will carry over to the next season of participation. Any student serving a penalty during a sport must remain in the sport in order for the penalty to be valid. If a student quits the sport, any remaining percentage of that violation will carry over to the next season of participation.
Second Violation A second violation results in a suspension from athletic competition for a period of 30% of the contests based on the regular season of the sport. All other sanctions listed under the first violation apply to second violations as well. A student with two violations in the same season will serve his/her suspension consecutively, not concurrently
Third Violation The third violation results in loss of eligibility for all athletic events for one calendar year from the date of the athletic code violation. If an athlete or participant has an additional offense(s) while already serving a year’s suspension, then the one year suspension will start over again dating from the time of the additional suspensions. A student desiring to participate again after the third offense must indicate his/her desire to that effect and must remain violation-free for the entire year of his/her penalty. Upon return, he/she will return to Step 2(2nd Offense).
General procedures if suspected of violating the Athletic Code Your coach, athletic director, and principal will interview you as to the reason(s) for suspected violations in an effort to confirm or refute the suspicion. As a school we have the authority to investigate if a student athlete is suspected of violating our athletic policy. The A.D. and principal will further investigate through interviews with those who may be aware of violations first-hand, those who may have limited knowledge of the violations, or those who may be involved with such violations. Any and all allegations of violations will be seriously addressed and investigated. The approved and appropriate remedies and consequences for the type of violation will be applied and enforced.

Multiple Violations:Violation of the code of involving behavior, alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco will not be considered separately. The first violation of any of the above will be considered as the first violation, the second violation of any of the above will be considered as the second violation, etc. Any conviction for a misdemeanor or felony is automatically a violation of the Athletic Code.
Switching Sports A student can switch sports during the season ONLY by consent of BOTH coaches. If two sports were in action at the same time, the sport with a game being played that day would take precedence. Otherwise, practice of the sport started first would take precedence.
