Germany: Democratic Republic Side • Democratic Republic: is where the public elects there leaders. • The East was this side. • They stuck strictly to the “constitution” and wanted to elect there leaders.
Germany: Federal Republic Side • Federal Republic: federal states in the form of a republic government. • The West side of Germany was Federal Republic. • Had Federal States. (purple part on map).
Germany Combining • Germany winded up combining after the Cold War division. • They became the Federal Republic of Germany. • They had 16 federal states.
Federal Republic • Federal Republic: federal states in the form of a republic government. • Bundesrat: federal council • (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) means Federal Republic of Germany.

Basic Law • Basic law is the equivalent to a constitution/amendment. • Grundgesetz is the German Word for Basic Law.
Basic Law Con. • Public life is based on the Basic Law. • Basic law is determined by living conditions, economy and social policy. • European Law must satisfy Basic Law. • The Basic Law is an Advantage because it allows people to give complaints. • It also allows people to understand what federal states control and Germany as a whole.
Taxes • Taxes go to Bundesrat. • Taxes at the federal level go to the states.
Bundesrat • Is a federal council of Germany. • Like a legislative branch. • It represents the 16 federal states. • Has a seat in the house of the lords on Berlin. • 50% or more of laws have to be approved by Bundesrat.
Federal Constitution Court • Is a institution to post war German democracy. • This court only acts when appealed to. • Protects the division of powers in the basic law and federal states. • Federal Constitution holds interpretation to the Basic Law.
