THE CLIMB & SAFARI • At 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, one of the seven summits • Ascend the mountain via the Umbwe Route to the Arrow Glacier. • The most challenging of the non-technical routes. • Descend through the lush jungle of the Mweka Route • Safari on the East African Plains - : Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire River National Park
DETAILS: • 2004 Dates: May 22nd – June 4th • The Venture will be supported by Earthtreks, a mountaineering guide service founded by Chris Warner • The cost is $3,995 plus airfare. This will include all land costs, including hotels, access to game parks, etc. • A $1,000 non-refundable deposit is due December 10, 2003 • The remainder is due January 14, 2004 • The trip is open to all MBA students at Wharton. • Capacity for 11 participants. ITINERARY FOR 2004 CLIMB & SAFARI • Day One – Depart US for Nairobi Kenya • Day Two – Arrive Nairobi, Kenya. Shuttle to Moshi, Tanzania. • Day Three – We begin the climb up the Umbwe Trailhead. We camp at 10,000ft. • Day Four -We continue up a ridge, leaving the lush forests behind as the trail becomes steeper. Our camp is located at 12,800 feet near the Barranco Hut . • Day Five - Today we head Northwest around Kilimanjaro’s main peak, and after three hours we reach our camp at the Lava Tower, 14,800 feet. • Day Six - A short day takes us up to our camp near the Arrow Glacier Hut at 15,744 feet
ITINERARY FOR 2004 CLIMB & SAFARI • Day Seven -An extra day is spent here at the base of the Arrow Glacier for acclimatization. A short hike in the morning is followed by lots of rest, and in the afternoon we make final preparations for the summit • Day Eight - Summit Day! We then descend the Mweka route, and we set camp after at least twelve hours of climbing at 10,200 feet. • Day Nine - Three to four hours of hiking take us through Mweka’s dense jungle to the trailhead. A private van takes us from there to our hotel in Moshi
ITINERARY FOR 2004 CLIMB & SAFARI • Day Ten - Travel to Lake Manyara National Park, where we begin our safari. From here we head to the Ngorongoro Crater. • Day Eleven - A full day of game drives on the rim of and inside the crater. In the evening drive to Tarangire. • Day Twelve - We explore Tarangire for the day, and we return to Moshi for a final celebration dinner. • Day Thirteen - Depart Nairobi for U.S.
No prior mountaineering experience is required. • The pace of the climb has been set to ensure all participants are fully acclimatized. • There will be local climbers who will assist with carrying extra gear. • A certain level of physical conditioning prior to the climb is definitely required. • Small team provides extended opportunities to build self-discipline, decision-making, and team leadership.
