Instructions to Install Safari OpenAccess May 28, 2008
What is Safari OpenAccess? • Also called Safari ODBC or just Safari • Product from Interactive Software Systems, Inc. • Purchased by the Ohio Department of Education for use by all OECN State Software Users. • Allows you the capability of pulling district data directly into applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. • Allows you to analyze, sort, total, create form letters and labels, etc. once the data is loaded into an application.
Requirements for installing Safari OpenAccess • PC running Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP • 32-bit Applications (Microsoft Office 97 or later) • Microsoft Basic and Microsoft Query (These should have been installed during the Microsoft Office software installation, however Microsoft Query sometimes is missed during installation because it has to be selected.)
How do I know if Microsoft Query is installed? • Open Microsoft Excel then click on data and then ‘import external data’, ‘create new query’ or ‘new database query’. • If Query is not installed you will receive a message stating so.
What should I do if Microsoft Query is not installed? • Microsoft Query can be installed off of the Microsoft Office Installation CD. • Contact your tech coordinator or contact SEOVEC Fiscal Services for assistance.
The following screen shots provide step by step instructions to install Safari OpenAccess.
SEOVEC Home Page www.seovec.org Select ‘Fiscal Services’ and click on ‘User Support’
Click here to download Safari Step by step written instructions, print if desired before downloading Safari This box will appear, enter your Alpha username and password
Click Here Enter this information and select the appropriate option from the ‘system type’ box. If your operating system is not listed select Windows 95.
Look at this document first, and in the Safari OpenAccess section write down the license key. Click here and the file download box below will appear. Click Save.
Click here for an update that needs to applied. Save the download file
The following two icons will now be on your desktop, double click this icon to install it first. You will come back to the icon below after installing Safari.
Unzip the files to this folder Click here to unzip the files This box will appear after the files are unzipped, click OK then Close the box above.
Enter your name, your district name and the license key which is case-sensitive (Letters must be in caps). Click NEXT.
Make sure “System Connections” is the tab that is open. From this box we will add the dictionaries that we want to access using Safari.
You can use any name you want for the connection name. Name it to describe the data you are accessing through the connection. This example is to access USPS data. Other examples of connection names you could use include USAS, EIS, EMIS, EMIS OCT08, EMIS JUN08, etc. Server Name should be seovca.seovec.org to connect to the Alpha Leave password fields blank Enter the fields indicated above. For User Name enter your username for the Alpha system. DO NOT enter your password. Click ‘Advanced Setup’ to enter the pathname for the data you will be accessing.
The Port Number and Service will already be filled in, DO NOT change these values. Enter the path name based on the data you are going to access, this name must be accurate in order to properly connect to your data. The path name will vary based on the data you are accessing. The next screen lists the various pathnames that can be used.
List of Pathnames • oecn$:safari usas • Uniform School Accounting System • oecn$:safari usps • Uniform School Payroll System • oecn$:safari eis • Equipment Inventory System • oecn$:safari emis [db_code] • EMIS users may specify an optional “database code” to indicate which database they want to use, if no code is specified the default database will be accessed. If the database code is used, multiple connection names for EMIS can be created. • Example: oecn$:safari emis oct08 • oct08 would access the October 2008 database files specifically
Access Level • You can only connect to data through Safari that you currently have access to on the Alpha. • For example, if you only have access to USAS files, you will NOT be able to connect to the USPS, EMIS, or EIS data.
Once you enter the pathname and click OK, you will come back to this screen. Click OK.
The connection is now added to the “system connections” section. You can continue to add other dictionaries that you want to access by repeating the previous steps. When you are done click NEXT.
This is the box you will see after the Safari files are installed. Choose ‘Return to the Main Menu’ so you can install the update.
