  2. Traits expressed as simple ratios • A monohybrid cross involves one pair of contrasting traits. (crossing a plant with purple and white flowers) • STEP 1: Mendel self pollinated the plants to ensure they were true breeding. (P generation) • STEP 2: Mendel cross pollinates two P generation plants with contrasting traits. (first filial generation/ f1 generation) • STEP 3: Mendel allowed the F1 generation to self pollinate. (second filial generation/ f2 generation)

  3. Mendel’s Results • F1 generation showed only one form of the character (all plants were purple) • However in the F2 generation the contrasting trait reappeared (some plants were white)
