Introduction to a corridor approach: • What are corridors ? • Why to approach inland shipping corridor based ? • What are the expected benefits ? • Under what conditions can a corridor approach work ? • What are the goals to aim for ? • How to proceed ?
Introduction to a corridor approach,Corridors? • What are corridors ? • Based on statistical analysis fairways that: carry MAJOR cargo flows • Many similarities in “customers demands” • Good example: Paris – Antwerp – Rotterdam • Main corridors in the EU…. • Netherlands has identified 8 corridors…

Eight corridors inthe Netherlands Established on statistics: major cargo flows
Introduction to a corridor approach Why to approach inland shipping corridor wise ? • Industries want predictable and guaranteed transport times • Harbours want efficient use of their facilities • Shippers want reliable and economical transports • Skippers want smooth and profitable transports
Introduction to a corridor approach,Expected benefits What are the expected benefits ? • Better service to fairway users to provide: • Guarantees on transport times for “just in time” supply chains • (Time) efficient harbour stays • Optimal lock / bridge passages • Efficient transports (preserve fuel etc.) • Optimal use of fairways
Introduction to a corridor approach,Conditions What are the conditions for Corridor Management ? • Agreements with stakeholders • Cooperation between many parties (public and private) • Investments in organization, technology, training etc. • Information exchanges between stakeholders and fairway management
Introduction to a corridor approach,Goals • Involvement of (sea-)harbors, shippers and skippers • Practical approach (no repetition of previous studies) • Limited time frame • Implementation of quick wins • Working towards realistic, implemental end-results
Introduction to a corridor approach,How to proceed • Organizational steps • Initial investigation between countries/organizations • Study (TEN-T funding ?) • Identifying “quick wins” and parallel implementation • Evaluation of study results • Implementation
Appointments Strassbourg 20th March 2008 • Fairway Organizations within FR, B, CH, D, NL and A agree that Corridor Management approach is a good concept on an operational level. • Further investigation necessary: which items,. Quick wins, integration in PLATINA or other studies. • Examples of items for short term: coordination maintenance works, coordination of information on blockings • Examples of items for longer term: implementation of ”just in time” principle, joint calamity abatement, comparable training activities of lock and bridges personnel. • July 2008: draft project plan will be discussed.
