The 5 “r’S” OF RETENTION • Give people a specific responsibility • Enforce requirements • Give out rewards/prizes • Assign new members a “club mentor” • Help build relationships between club members
Keep meetings from being boring • Break up monotony with an ice-breaker • Have a “greeter” to welcome members, and introduce guests to the club • Have someone do a group activity every week such as the pledge of allegiance • Have someone tell a story or give a “thought of the day” • Recognize Birthdays, accomplishments , milestones
Change up Meeting Styles and formats • Business • Social • Service Projects • Speaker/lecture • Start and end on time • Have a planned agenda for each meeting
Challenges you face in keeping members • Circumstances change: • Conflict with schedule • Academic load may be too heavy • Solutions: • Email update about the meetings to all members • Have a newsletter with up-coming projects at varied times • Have more then one meeting- but lead by another officer • Offer to meet them and go to the meeting together
Things that make people stay members • Make people feel welcome and appreciated • Introduce new members the first time they come • Have a special “induction ceremony” • give a certificate or badge when they join the club • Allow other members to talk about activities they are working on
