Education • Attended Garnet Valley schools K-12 • Started at Drexel University as a finance major • Graduated from WCU and then earned my masters there as well • Middle School English Praxis(certified to teach English in 6th, 7th, or 8th grades); “highly qualified” in state of PA • Reading Specialist

  3. My Kids • Jordan is 18 and is a freshman at West Virginia U. We are suffering through the homesick blues right now  • Noelle is 10 and in 5th grade at GVES. She loves basketball and surfing 

  7. Homework Blog • Check my website after school to see each day’s homework for each class.   8. Student Planner • Students should record assignments daily and for every class. • Grading scale is located on p.4 • The 6th grade daily schedule is located on the back cover.

Technology • Overhead projector used for showing videos, going over homework or tests, writing workshop, class activities, etc. • Smartboard…used for class activities, reviews, and interactive lessons on a variety of topics • Computer lab & mobile lab for creating power point presentations & slide shows, blogging, conducting research, writing final drafts, taking on-line quizzes, exploring web quests, reviewing for tests, Teen Biz, and more.

Reading Instruction Award-winning, high-interest novels PA state standards related to reading, listening, and speaking are taught and assessed primarily through the use of classroom core novels and/or the sixth grade reading anthology. Word study and vocabulary skills are developed through class novels, word studies and the 6th grade core list (WOW)

Teen Biz • Similar to KidBiz at GVES or BSES but NO HOMEWORK! • Geared to the “middle schooler” • Tailored to the each student’s independent reading level for non-fiction text • We visit the lab once each week on Tuesdays • Goal is 40 “activities,” which consists of a current event article and a short comprehension activity • Research suggests that repeated exposure to nonfiction text helps students perform better on PSSA tests • Weekly prizes!

  14. Independent Reading Bye, bye 100 Book Challenge  Students read 2 – 3 books each marking period; one or two are assigned; one is free choice. Assessments vary and can include written and/or oral reports, written tests, projects, and/or AR tests. Schedule for Q1 & Q2 was handed out to students. This schedule includes book titles, assessment expectations, and all due dates. Accelerated Reader (AR) “Tips for Success” sheet is in IR section of your child’s binder

  15. Grammar Grammar skills taught throughout the year Whole-class, direct instruction Also during Writer’s Workshop Focus is primarily on using correct grammar within authentic writing & speaking Games/activities to further understanding

  16. PowerSchools • PLEASE USE IT!!! Once a week is perfect. Try not to drive yourself or your child insane by checking every little assignment. It can be addictive  • Grades are live so you can access your child’s current progress at any time. • If you believe there may be a discrepancy, please feel free to e-mail me and I’ll check into it and get back to you ASAP! • Your “username” is your child’s school ID #. Confidential PS information was included in the summer mailing. Check with guidance on your way out if you need a second copy of this information.
