  3. A Start... • The River Eden’s source are two separate streams, named Little grain and Red gill. • The river flows from south to north

  4. Quick Facts • Lies in Cumbria, England • Runs for 80 miles or 130 kilometres! • It flows through: Kirkby Stephen, city of Carlisle, Penrith, Wetheraland Mallerstrong. • It is laid under corby bridge

  5. This is Corby bridge This big project started in 1830 and finished in 1834

  6. The Neighbours protected species that share the river: • Water crows • Lamprey • White claw-Cray fish • Otters ( my faverouite ) • Bullheads • Atlantic salmon • And water voles

Otters Here are the main facts on river otters: • Aquatic mammals • Prefer water boarded by woods • Can breath under water for four whole minutes! • Mainly eat fish but they also like : frogs, crayfish, clams and snails • Are part of the mustelidae group, family members include: Sea otters, weasels, skunks and badgers.

  9. Wildlife continued The river has a home for: • 183 different species of plant, which is the highest in Britain • Largest colony of nesting sand martins • And the otters are increasing! 

  10. Nesting Sand Martin Sand martins nest in small holes inside the dry part of a river bank

  11. Erosion • The sediment from the bank-side erosion has a negative effect on the wildlife. Ten of the rivers in the Eden catchment have over 15% of their length with severe erosion caused by livestock (identified from analysing aerial images). The Rivers trust, tackles bank-side erosion with fencing project.

  12. Meander in the Eden This is a very small meander which is near the middle of its tracks

  13. The beginning of an ox-bow lake This is one phrase of the ox-bow lake to come

  14. ... And an End The rivers mouth is called Solway Firth, which then leads out to the sea.
