Board AIMS • Safe, Healthy, Welcoming Schools • Increase Opportunity and Achievement • Effective and Efficient Operations
Situation • Three of the four elementary school buildings in Albert Lea are at or over capacity. • Re-drawing boundaries will only partially alleviate the situation, since the two schools with the least amount of students currently have school choice as a federally mandated option
Board Directed Options to Consider • Move all Kindergarten students to Brookside, create a Kindergarten Center • Move all 6th Grade students to Brookside, create a 6th Grade Center • Move all 6th Grade students to Southwest MS, move 8th grade students to high school
Impact on Student Achievement and Opportunity- K Center • Leveling of class sizes • More effective grade planning • Good fit with pre-school programs at B-side • Close to experiential learning • ALC Would have to move to high school- makes it less alternative • ECSE programs might move to elementaries
Impact on Student Achievement and Opportunity- 6th Grade Center • Leveling of class sizes • More effective grade level planning • 6th grade a better fit outside of elementary • Good Experiential location for Kayaking, Rock Wall etc… • Inability to conduct multi-grade level projects • Concerns about flexing among ability levels • Concerns about after school programs • Special needs programs to meet different needs a concern • ALC would move back to high school- less alternative • ECSE might move to elementaries- taking up space vacated by 6th grade
Impact on on Opportunity and Achievement 6th Grade to MS- 8th Grade to HS • 6th graders socially a better fit in Middle School than elementary • HS was built for separate “Houses” by grade level- a natural fit to house 8th and 9th grade separately from the older students • Enrichment opportunities at high school • Fine arts program would benefit- no more travelling between multiple elementary buildings- • Better alignment with high school programs- increased communicaton between Grade 8 staff and HS about curriculum
Impact on on Opportunity and Achievement 6th Grade to MS- 8th Grade to HS • One less move for students then 6th grade center. elem-ms-hs • 7/8 athletic concerns- would still play at SWMS • Concerns with Grade 8 and Grade 12 in the same building • Impact on MS ALC 7-8 program • All Student at SW next year would be new to the school… • .
Kindergarten Impact on Efficient and Effective Operations • Bus increase- $45,000 (Annual) • Kitchen upgrade- $23,000 (one time) • Bathroom upgrade- $12,000 (one time) • Administrative Secretary- $ 26000 (Annual) • Administrator will have duties realigned to cover- significant opportunity cost • Specialist coverage? • Note- Potential loss of Headstart $30-36,000 annually
6th Grade Center impact on Efficient and Effective Operations • Bus increase- $45,000 (Annual) • Kitchen upgrade- $23,000 (one time) • Administrative Secretary- $ 26000 (Annual) • Administrator will have duties realigned to cover- significant opportunity cost • Special Ed coverage? • Specialist coverage? Traveling time? • Note- Potential loss of Headstart $30-36,000 annually
6th Grade SW- 8th Grade HS • $9000 annual bus increase • Adding 250+ students to high school- some extra administrative support $26,000
Next Steps • Examine licensure issues for 6-7 middle school • Meet with community groups • Will be seeking a board decision in October at regular board meeting
