Progress Reporting Assessment of student progress in relation to outcomes outlined in curriculum is important for the following reasons. • Teachers can change or refine instructional plans to ensure learning activities are appropriate for all students. • Allows for reporting student progress clearly to students and parents. • Aids in decision making regarding student placement. • Program effectiveness can be evaluated and programs revised to improve student learning.
Purpose of Reporting Progress Communicates a summary of learning to students and parents Invites deeper, more helpful communication with parents to examine what has been learned, how well it has been learned, what remains to be learned and possible ways parents may assist in further learning
Assessing Outcomes Writing – Grade 1 Reading Checklist – Grade 1 http://curriculum.nesd.ca/ (This site has rubrics for Sk outcomes, prepared by teachers in Saskatchewan)
TIPS • Not all GradeBooks will look alike • Planning & assessing with the outcome in mind • Separate achievement from behaviours and attitudes • Employ performance standards that refer to growth and are criterion based • D/BE indicates a beginning level of knowledge of outcomes • C/PR indicates nearing expectations of outcomes • B/ME indicates meeting expectations of outcomes • A/ET indicates extensive knowledge of outcomes (independence)
Curriculum Outcomes The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education curriculum has specific learning outcomes for all grades. Outcomes tell us what a child should be able to do by the end of each grade.
