Thesis Statement for Allegory • Thesis Statement: Allegory in the Lord of the Flies demonstrates Golding’s novel setting of boys trapped on a deserted island as a symbolic microcosm of man’s human barbarity and savagery by means of murder and corruption. • Directional Statement: That is, Golding’s use of the characters Piggy, Simon and Jack reveal the symbolic barbarity of human society as an allegorical lesson for his audience.

Thesis for Theme • Thesis Statement: William Golding’s use of fear as a major theme in the Lord of the Flies illustrates a symbolic decent of the boys from when they first arrive on the island becoming blind to what is unknown and ignorant to their violent capabilities • Direction Statement: Likewise, fear as a catalyst for the boys is symbolically represented through masking oneself, Lord of the Flies and “beastie.”
