The Past TenseEl Preterito • Use the preterite tense when you are talking about actions or events that were completedin the past.
How do we form the preterite tense for AR Verbs? • Choose an AR Verb (bailar) • Chop off the AR. • You are left with the stem of the verb (bail-) • Add the appropriate (as opposed to the inappropriate) endings to the stem.

DAY 2 NotesThose pesky exceptions! • There are certain verbs that require a stem change in the YO form in the preterite tense. • -car verbs • -gar verbs • -zar verbs • Why? • We need to keep the same sound in the stem throughout the entire conjugation.
-CAR verbs • The “c” in “-car” verbs changes to a “qu” in the yo form in the preterite tense. Buscar = to look for Yo busqué Nosotros buscamos Tú buscaste Vosotros buscasteis Él Ellos Ella buscó Ellas buscaron Ud.
